The Ledger of Progress

This is a ledger: the factual record of measurable improvement in ordinary life, set down entry by entry so that each claim can be checked against the record it came from. A closing section states, just as plainly, what a ledger of this kind cannot show. Each entry states a comparison and, where it helps, names the source it leans on, whether that is a historian's estimate, an economist's index, or a public health agency's count. None of the figures below should be read as exact to the decimal point; history did not keep its books that tidily, and the earlier the period, the rougher the estimate becomes. Where a number is uncertain, it is marked as such, and the reader should treat "roughly," "on the order of," and "commonly estimated at" as doing real work rather than as throat-clearing.

The list is organised by theme: health, money and material comfort, work, knowledge, violence and governance, travel, and the small daily comforts of a house. Read it the way you would read a set of accounts rather than a sermon. Some of the entries concern anaesthesia and clean drinking water; one concerns a wooden box with a lock on it, for tea. The ledger does not rank them. Some entries will be familiar, some less so; taken individually, most describe a change so gradual that nobody alive experienced it as a single event, which is part of why it is so easy to forget how large the sum of them is.

Health and the Length of Life

Life expectancy at birth across most of recorded history hovered around 30 years, a figure dragged down chiefly by the deaths of children rather than by uniformly short adult lives; a person who survived infancy and childhood in almost any pre-industrial society had a reasonable chance of reaching sixty or beyond. Global life expectancy today exceeds 70 years, and in the wealthiest countries it sits at roughly 80, against about 32 years as recently as 1900, by estimates compiled by Max Roser and colleagues at Our World in Data. The historical baseline is standard across demographic history and appears in most textbook treatments of pre-industrial populations.

In most societies through most of history, a substantial share of children, commonly estimated at somewhere between a third and a half, died before reaching adulthood, and a family that buried several infants was unremarkable, grieved but expected. Global under-five mortality has since fallen to roughly 4 percent, and in rich countries to well under half of one percent, according to the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation, a fall of more than an order of magnitude within two centuries.

Death in childbirth was once a routine hazard woven into the ordinary expectations of married life: in early modern Europe, estimates commonly run to somewhere near 1 in 100 births ending in the mother's death, and considerably higher during local epidemics of childbed fever. The global maternal mortality ratio today stands at roughly 200 deaths per 100,000 live births, still far too high in some regions and a real and present injustice there, but under 10 per 100,000 across most of the wealthy world.

Anaesthesia did not exist as a medical practice until ether was publicly demonstrated at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in October 1846. Before that date, every amputation, every extracted tooth, and every set bone was endured fully conscious, the patient restrained by assistants rather than sedated. The fact was so ordinary at the time that it barely registers in most historical accounts, and so unthinkable now, when a routine tooth extraction is numbed as a matter of course, that it barely registers in the other direction either.

Antibiotics were not widely available until the mass production of penicillin in the mid-1940s, following Alexander Fleming's observation of the mould in 1928. Before then, a septic scratch or a burst appendix killed with something close to indifference to the patient's wealth. Calvin Coolidge's sixteen-year-old son died in 1924 of blood poisoning that began with a blister raised while playing tennis on the White House lawn, a death that no amount of presidential access to medicine could prevent.

Smallpox killed an estimated 300 million people in the twentieth century alone, more than all of that century's wars combined, and left many of its survivors scarred or blind. The World Health Organization declared it eradicated in 1980, after a coordinated global vaccination campaign traced the last natural case to Somalia in 1977. It remains the only human disease ever deliberately erased from the planet.

Polio paralysed tens of thousands of American children a year at its mid-century peak; the worst single year, 1952, recorded nearly 58,000 cases and prompted the closure of swimming pools and cinemas out of plain public fear. Wild poliovirus today survives in only a small number of countries, with global annual case counts in recent years reduced to double digits or fewer, per the World Health Organization and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Famine visited nearly every settled society repeatedly across recorded history, from the periodic crop failures of medieval Europe to the Bengal famine of 1943 and the Chinese famine of 1959 to 1961, each a mass death event driven substantially by the physical difficulty of moving food to where it was needed in time. Mass famine today is, with grim exceptions, largely confined to war zones and deliberately engineered political catastrophes, of the kind documented by the economist Amartya Sen, rather than a recurring hazard of ordinary agricultural life, the mechanism defeated by global trade, modern storage, and international food aid.

Average adult height in industrialised nations has risen by several centimetres over the past 150 to 200 years, and in some countries by considerably more; Dutch men, among the world's tallest, are commonly estimated to have gained close to 20 centimetres since the mid-nineteenth century. The economic historian Robert Fogel and others attribute the change chiefly to better childhood nutrition and a lighter burden of disease, since genetic change on that timescale is essentially impossible.

Roughly nine in ten human beings are estimated to have lived in what we would now call extreme poverty two centuries ago, a condition so nearly universal that it scarcely had a name of its own. By recent World Bank figures the share has fallen below one in ten, with the steepest part of the decline occurring since 1990, driven substantially by economic growth in China, India, and the rest of Asia.

Before a vaccine became available in 1963, measles infected several million Americans each year, nearly all of them children, and killed several hundred of them annually, returning in waves with grim regularity. Widespread vaccination has since pushed the disease to the edge of elimination in most wealthy countries, though outbreaks recur wherever coverage slips, a reminder that these gains are maintained rather than permanent.

Diphtheria ranked among the leading causes of childhood death in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, killing more than ten thousand American children in a typical year of the 1920s, often by slow suffocation as a membrane formed across the throat. Routine immunisation has made it rare enough in vaccinated populations that most physicians in rich countries now complete an entire career without seeing a single case.

Tuberculosis was once so common a cause of death in industrialising cities that it was known simply as the White Plague, claiming poets and paupers with equal ease. Its death rate in wealthy countries has fallen by well over 90 percent since the late nineteenth century, owing first to better housing and sanitation and later to antibiotics, though the disease remains a major killer in poorer parts of the world.

Oral rehydration therapy, a simple mixture of salts, sugar, and clean water developed and popularised from the 1970s onward, costs pennies to administer. Public health researchers credit it with saving tens of millions of children from what was once among the largest killers of infants worldwide, dehydration from diarrhoeal disease, and the medical journal The Lancet once described it as potentially the most important medical advance of the twentieth century.

Five-year survival for childhood leukaemia, the most common cancer of childhood, has risen from roughly one in ten patients in the early 1960s to close to nine in ten today in wealthy countries, and five-year survival across all cancers combined in the United States has climbed from about half of patients in the mid-1970s to roughly two-thirds now, per the SEER registries, owing to earlier detection, better surgery, and drug classes that did not exist before the 1970s.

Age-adjusted death rates from heart disease in the United States and much of Western Europe have fallen by more than half since their peak in the 1960s, and by some measures considerably more, a decline attributed to reduced smoking, better blood pressure control, statin drugs introduced from the late 1980s onward, and emergency cardiac care that simply did not exist a lifetime ago.

Childbed fever was once a leading killer of new mothers, spread in many cases by physicians themselves moving between autopsies and deliveries without washing their hands, an idea so foreign to the medical thinking of the day that the man who demonstrated it, the Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis, was ridiculed and driven from his post in the 1840s. Routine hygiene and, later, antibiotics have since made the condition rare.

Blood typing, discovered by Karl Landsteiner in 1901, made safe transfusion possible for the first time; before it, a transfusion was a gamble roughly as likely to kill the patient through a mismatched immune reaction as to save them. Transfusion is now a routine, life-saving part of childbirth, surgery, and trauma care, performed without a second thought in any modern hospital.

Guinea worm disease, a parasitic infection acquired from contaminated drinking water that produces a metre-long worm emerging slowly through the skin over weeks of agony, afflicted an estimated 3.5 million people a year across Africa and Asia as recently as 1986. A patient campaign led by the Carter Center and partner health ministries, relying on water filtration and community education rather than any drug or vaccine, has brought the annual count down to a few dozen cases worldwide, putting a second human disease within reach of eradication.

Through the 1980s and into the mid-1990s, an HIV diagnosis was close to a death sentence, with remaining life commonly measured in a small number of years. Effective combination antiretroviral therapy, introduced from 1996 onward, turned the infection into a manageable chronic condition for anyone with reliable access to the drugs, so that a person diagnosed young can now expect a near-normal lifespan, though access remains seriously unequal across and within countries.

Insulin, isolated in 1921 by a Toronto team including Frederick Banting and Charles Best and first given to a fourteen-year-old patient in January 1922, transformed type 1 diabetes almost overnight from a diagnosis that killed most children within a year or two into a manageable lifelong condition. The only prior treatment was a starvation diet that bought months at the cost of the patient's remaining strength.

Caesarean section, known in some form since antiquity, carried so high a maternal death rate before antiseptic technique and antibiotics that well into the nineteenth century it was generally reserved for cases where the mother was already considered beyond saving and the aim was to rescue the child. It is now among the most commonly performed major operations in wealthy countries, with maternal deaths from the procedure itself reduced to a small fraction of one percent.

Rabies meant near-certain and famously agonising death once symptoms appeared, and remained essentially untreatable until Louis Pasteur's post-exposure vaccine was first used successfully on a bitten child, Joseph Meister, in 1885. A modern course of post-exposure treatment, available in any developed-world hospital, is close to fully effective if given before symptoms begin, turning one of medicine's most feared diagnoses into a preventable outcome of a dog bite.

Scurvy killed sailors on long voyages by the shipload; a commonly cited estimate holds that it claimed as many as two million seamen between 1500 and 1800, more than storms, shipwreck, and combat together. James Lind's controlled trial of citrus aboard HMS Salisbury in 1747, among the first clinical trials on record, and the Royal Navy's adoption of lemon juice at the end of that century reduced the disease from a defining hazard of seafaring to a historical curiosity.

A baby born three months early in 1950 almost always died, whatever the parents' means; neonatal intensive care, ventilation, and surfactant therapy introduced from the late twentieth century have raised survival at 28 weeks' gestation to well above 90 percent in well-equipped hospitals, by most published estimates, a rescue of lives that every earlier generation of parents simply had to mourn.

Cataract, the slow clouding of the eye's lens, was for most of history a common and untreatable path into blindness in old age, addressed only by the crude and dangerous technique of couching. Modern cataract surgery, a procedure of twenty minutes or so under local anaesthetic, restores sight so reliably that it is now among the most frequently performed operations on earth, numbering in the tens of millions each year.

The global death rate from malaria fell by roughly half between 2000 and the mid-2010s, according to World Health Organization estimates, with insecticide-treated bed nets credited with the largest share of the improvement; the disease still kills on the order of half a million people a year, most of them African children, so this entry records a battle half-won rather than a victory, but the halving is real and recent.

Poverty, Prices, and Material Comfort

The economist William Nordhaus calculated the "time price" of artificial light: the hours of labour needed to buy a given amount of illumination. By his estimate, light that cost a Babylonian labourer more than fifty hours of work, and a nineteenth-century worker several hours, now costs an ordinary worker less than a second, purchased as electricity for an efficient bulb. The fall over the past two centuries alone runs to several thousand-fold, and over the longer span far more, at which point a figure stops being informative and becomes merely large.

The economists Marian Tupy and Gale Pooley, in their book Superabundance, apply the same time-price method across a broad basket of foods, metals, and fuels, and find that many now cost only a small fraction, often in the single digits as a percentage, of the labour hours they cost 150 to 200 years ago, even as the goods themselves have generally improved in quality, safety, and consistency along the way.

In 1980 the economist Julian Simon bet the ecologist Paul Ehrlich that the real price of any five metals of Ehrlich's choosing would fall, not rise, over the following decade, wagering against Ehrlich's prediction of worsening scarcity as population grew. Ehrlich chose copper, chromium, nickel, tin, and tungsten; by 1990 all five had fallen in inflation-adjusted price, and Simon collected on the wager, a result frequently cited against simple resource-scarcity pessimism, though a fair account adds that over other decades the bet could have gone the other way, which is the trouble with settling a general theory by choosing a decade.

At the start of the twentieth century, only a small fraction of the world's population had electric light at home, and even in wealthy cities it was often confined to the richest neighbourhoods. Today, by recent World Bank estimates, on the order of nine in ten human beings have access to electricity, with the remaining gap concentrated chiefly in parts of sub-Saharan Africa.

Piped, treated drinking water was, as recently as 1900, a privilege of wealthy urban households in a handful of countries, while most people worldwide drew water from wells, rivers, or public pumps carrying a constant risk of disease. Roughly nine in ten people now have at least a basic level of drinking water service, per the World Health Organization and UNICEF joint monitoring programme, though hundreds of millions still lack it.

Basic sanitation, meaning a facility that safely separates human waste from human contact, followed a similar arc: rare and unevenly distributed a century ago, and an underappreciated cause of childhood disease and death. It now reaches a substantial majority of the world's population, even as open defecation remains a serious unresolved problem in parts of South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Consider a king reigning in the 1820s, a plutocrat of the 1920s, and an ordinary middle-class person today, and ask which of the three led the safer and more comfortable life, a comparison the genre is fond of and does not have to rig. The king could buy anything money then bought and still could not buy anaesthesia, which did not exist until the 1840s, so his broken bones were set and his teeth pulled while he was fully conscious. He could not buy antibiotics, so a septic scratch killed him as readily as it killed a farmhand, and several of his own children, tended by the finest physicians in the kingdom, were more likely than not to die before adulthood.

That same king ate whatever was in season on his own estates, since nothing perishable travelled far or fast enough to reach his table from anywhere else, and a single pineapple raised out of season under glass counted as a serious extravagance, sometimes rented rather than eaten and returned intact so that it might preside over someone else's dinner the following week. Candles lit his rooms, an expense serious enough to be entered in the household accounts, and the stubs passed to the servants as a recognised perquisite of the position; open fires, constantly tended, heated them; and he crossed his own kingdom no faster than a horse could carry him, a limit that bound a royal messenger exactly as it bound everyone else.

The 1920s plutocrat enjoyed real luxuries unknown to the king: electric light, a telephone, a motorcar, none of which had existed in usable form a century earlier. He still had no antibiotics, since penicillin was not observed until 1928 nor widely available for another fifteen years, so a burst appendix or a streptococcal infection could kill a millionaire's child as readily as anyone else's, as it killed Coolidge's son in 1924. Crossing an ocean still meant days aboard a liner, whatever the size of his fortune.

An ordinary middle-class person today carries more computing power and more accumulated human knowledge in one pocket than existed in either man's kingdom or fortune, receives anaesthesia and antibiotics as routine rather than privilege, eats fruit from six continents in midwinter, crosses an ocean in an afternoon, and can reasonably expect any child of theirs to live to meet grandchildren. Almost none of this appears in how people describe their own lives, which is rather the point: abundance of this kind arrived slowly and quietly enough to pass unnoticed, though its sudden absence would be noticed, and mourned, within a day.

Food took just over 40 percent of an average American household's budget at the start of the twentieth century, according to early Bureau of Labor Statistics expenditure surveys, a share that left little room for anything beyond subsistence in a bad year. The comparable figure today is on the order of 10 percent, counting meals eaten out, a decline mirrored to varying degrees across most wealthy economies and one that freed a large share of household income for goods and services earlier generations could not have afforded even to want.

The washing machine and, later, the automatic dryer eliminated one of the most physically punishing chores of domestic life, performed historically almost entirely by women on a designated washday that could consume the better part of a day each week: water heated by hand, linen scrubbed and wrung wet and heavy, the whole house organised around the task, which was treated with the respect owed to an opponent of roughly one's own size. Economic historians treat the appliance as having returned a substantial block of weekly time to every household that acquired one.

Clothing once claimed a significant share of a household's budget and was hand-made or repeatedly mended at home out of necessity rather than sentiment. Industrial textile production has cut its real and time-price cost so far that an ordinary modern wardrobe would have represented a small fortune in cloth and tailoring labour to a household of modest means two centuries ago, when a single good coat might be willed from father to son.

Global GDP per person, adjusted for inflation, has risen by roughly a factor of ten or more since 1820, according to estimates compiled by the Maddison Project, the economic history database maintained at the University of Groningen. Sustained material growth at that rate has no real precedent anywhere in the record before the industrial era began.

Coffee, tea, sugar, and chocolate were, as recently as the eighteenth century, expensive imported luxuries enjoyed chiefly by the aristocracy and the merchant class, often kept under lock in the household's most secure cabinet; the locking tea caddy survives in antique shops as evidence, a small wooden safe built on the understanding that the servants could be trusted with the silver but not with the leaves. All four are now cheap staples in every corner shop in the developed world and increasingly in the developing one, their relative prices collapsed by industrial-scale production, global shipping, and the end of the colonial trading monopolies that once kept them artificially dear.

Air conditioning, a rare and expensive novelty as recently as the mid-twentieth century, confined largely to cinemas and department stores that used it to lure customers, has become common enough in wealthy countries that its absence is now the exception. Its spread carried measurable effects on summer mortality and worker productivity, and, by some economic historians' accounts, reshaped the entire pattern of settlement across the American South and other hot regions.

The share of humanity classified as chronically undernourished, meaning without reliable access to enough calories for an active life, fell from roughly one in three people in the developing world around 1970 to under one in ten worldwide by recent United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates, even as world population more than doubled over the same period, a combination that Thomas Malthus would have judged close to impossible.

Housing in wealthy countries has generally grown larger and better equipped even as households shrank: the average new single-family American home of around 1,000 square feet in 1950 has become a median of well over 2,000 square feet in recent decades, and now routinely includes amenities, a private bathroom, central heating, that were far from universal a century earlier.

Computing power offers perhaps the steepest price collapse in the entire ledger. A commercial computer of the 1960s filled a room, required a dedicated technical staff, cost the equivalent of millions of today's dollars, and performed a small fraction of the calculations per second that a cheap pocket device now performs without effort, a trajectory the semiconductor industry tracked for decades under the informal name of Moore's Law, a law in the sense that a target repeatedly hit is a law.

Access to basic financial services, a bank account in which wages can be received and savings kept safely, reached roughly three-quarters of the world's adults by 2021, per the World Bank's Findex survey, up from about half a decade earlier, with mobile-money systems such as Kenya's M-Pesa carrying banking to hundreds of millions of people whom no branch network had ever found it profitable to serve.

Meat, for working families across Europe and much of the world, was long a Sunday food, purchased sparingly and stretched through the week; per-person meat consumption in most industrialised countries roughly doubled or more over the twentieth century, according to FAO food balance data, and the roast that once marked a holiday now marks an ordinary Tuesday, whatever one makes of the dietary and environmental consequences, which belong in a different ledger.

Work, Time, and Freedom

A common working week in nineteenth-century factories and mines ran to 60, 70, or in some trades more than 80 hours, often with children as young as six or seven working alongside the adults. The standard week in most rich countries today runs to roughly 35 to 40 hours, a change won over a century and a half through legislation, union organising, and the rising productivity that made shorter hours economically bearable, and compressed by the labour movement into the demand for eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will.

Child labour, meaning the routine full-time employment of young children in fields, mines, and mills, was near-universal across most societies for most of history, a plain economic necessity of subsistence life rather than an abuse in the eyes of the time. It has since been sharply curtailed and is now illegal in some form in almost every country, notwithstanding real and troubling exceptions that persist in the informal global economy and in certain supply chains.

Legal chattel slavery, an institution present in some form across most of recorded history and on every inhabited continent, was abolished in law across virtually the entire world within roughly a century and a half, a moral and legal transformation without precedent in a record that had until then largely treated the institution as an unremarkable fact of economic life. Mauritania came last, abolishing slavery formally in 1981 and criminalising it explicitly only in 2007.

Women's legal and political rights, including property ownership, the vote, and access to higher education and the professions, expanded across most of the world within roughly a century, in effect doubling, in a formal legal sense, the portion of humanity able to participate fully in civic and economic life. New Zealand granted women the national vote first, in 1893; most of the world followed over the next hundred years, and some countries, including Switzerland at the federal level in 1971, only within living memory.

In 1930 John Maynard Keynes predicted, in his essay "Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren," that rising productivity would deliver a fifteen-hour working week within a century, leaving people to wrestle with leisure rather than scarcity. The productivity arrived; the fifteen-hour week did not. The grandchildren in question are, by the timetable, us. Hours have fallen substantially but nowhere near that far, a useful reminder that much of the gain has been taken as additional consumption rather than additional rest.

Paid annual holiday, now a legal entitlement of four weeks or more in most European countries and a common if less formalised practice in North America, was essentially nonexistent for the ordinary industrial or agricultural worker of the nineteenth century, for whom a day not worked was a day not paid, and often a day spent at real risk of losing the position altogether.

Workplace deaths have fallen by more than nine-tenths in the United States over the past century: a Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the rate at roughly 61 deaths per 100,000 workers in 1913, against about 3.5 per 100,000 in recent years, a decline achieved even as the workforce grew many times larger and moved through entirely new kinds of hazard along the way.

State-backed old-age pensions, of which Germany's 1889 scheme under Bismarck is generally credited as the first, were unusual as recently as 1900, when old age without savings or supportive children commonly meant destitution or the workhouse. Some form of state or employer pension now covers the large majority of workers in developed economies, changing what old age without independent wealth actually means for an ordinary person and making a retirement of a decade or more, spent free of paid labour, an ordinary expectation rather than a rarity.

The two-day weekend is a twentieth-century invention. Henry Ford's adoption of the five-day week in his factories in 1926 is often cited as the landmark, well ahead of most of American industry, which had generally conceded a single day of rest, if that; Ford presented the change as commerce rather than charity, reasoning in part that a man with a free Saturday would want somewhere to drive. The phrase "the weekend" only entered common speech once there was one.

Domestic service was once among the largest categories of employment in industrialising Britain and America, absorbing a substantial share of all working women as maids, cooks, and laundresses in other people's houses, for long hours and little pay. It has shrunk to a small fraction of the workforce in wealthy countries, its labour largely absorbed by household appliances, which require no wages, no attic room, and no Sunday afternoon off, and by better-paying work elsewhere in the economy.

Occupational disease from exposures such as lead, asbestos, and coal dust once shortened the working lives of miners, painters, and factory hands as a matter of routine and largely unquestioned course. Regulation since the mid-twentieth century has substantially reduced rates of occupational lung disease and poisoning across the wealthy world, even as the same hazards persist, seriously, where enforcement is weaker.

Guaranteed parental leave, whether paid or unpaid, is now a legal entitlement in the large majority of countries. No such protection existed in law for most of industrial history, when a pregnancy could and often did mean the permanent, unappealable loss of a woman's job.

Legal protection against workplace discrimination on grounds of disability, including the requirement that employers make reasonable accommodation, is recent; the Americans with Disabilities Act dates only to 1990. Before such laws, a physical or sensory disability commonly meant exclusion from most paid employment altogether, regardless of the person's actual capacity for the work in question.

Forced and bonded labour has not disappeared; the International Labour Organization still counts millions of people held in it. But it is no longer the openly legal, socially unremarkable practice it was across large parts of the world for most of history. It now operates everywhere as a crime pursued in defiance of the law rather than under its protection.

Agriculture employed roughly three-quarters of the American workforce around 1800, and comparable or larger shares almost everywhere else; the figure in the United States and most wealthy countries today is under 2 percent, while total farm output has multiplied many times over. The release of the great majority of humanity from the daily physical work of raising its own food is, by any accounting, among the largest single changes in the history of human labour.

Knowledge, Literacy, and Information

As recently as 1820, only a small minority of the world's adults could read, commonly estimated at somewhere near one in ten, and literacy was treated in most places as a marker of class rather than a basic expectation. Global adult literacy today stands at roughly 87 percent by UNESCO estimates, and considerably higher among the young, which means the gap closes further with each successive generation.

Before Johannes Gutenberg's press, developed in the 1450s, a book was copied by hand at the rate of months of a scribe's labour per volume, and a modest library was a form of serious wealth; the more careful institutions chained their volumes to the desks, a precaution now reserved for pens at the bank. Within fifty years, presses operating in more than 250 European towns had printed millions of volumes, by some estimates more books than European scribes had produced in the previous thousand years, and the price of the written word began a fall that has never stopped.

The American engineer Vannevar Bush, writing in 1945 in his essay "As We May Think," imagined a desk-sized machine he called the memex, which would hold a lifetime's books and papers on microfilm for instant retrieval, a vision considered wildly ambitious at the time. An ordinary smartphone now holds and retrieves a volume and variety of text, image, and reference material that comfortably exceeds Bush's imagined desk, and rides in a pocket rather than standing in a study, the size being the part he got wrong.

Formal schooling beyond a few years was, for most of history, the preserve of a small minority, generally the sons of the wealthy or boys destined for the clergy, while most children, including nearly all girls, received little or no instruction at all. Primary education is now close to universal, with global enrolment rates above 85 percent by UNESCO figures, and compulsory by law in the great majority of countries.

University attendance a century ago was restricted to a tiny fraction of each generation in every country on earth, a rarity rather than an expected stage of life for anyone outside a narrow elite. Tertiary enrolment in many wealthy nations now exceeds 60 percent of the relevant age cohort, and the world's universities enrol more students today than existed as literate adults in some earlier centuries.

A full set of a major printed encyclopaedia, such as the Britannica, cost a significant fraction of an ordinary family's monthly income for much of the twentieth century, and was sold door to door as much as a status object as a reference tool. Wikipedia, a multilingual encyclopaedia maintained continuously, and argued over continuously, by volunteer editors and free to anyone with an internet connection, is larger by a wide margin than any print encyclopaedia ever produced; the English-language edition alone runs to more than six million articles, a scale no print publisher, however well funded, could have matched at any price in any earlier century.

Public libraries spread through the English-speaking world chiefly from the late nineteenth century onward, in substantial part through the philanthropy of Andrew Carnegie, who funded roughly 2,500 of them worldwide. They gave ordinary people free access to books that lay well beyond household budgets, and digital lending and open online archives have since extended that access further still.

Machine translation produced crude and often unusable results as recently as the 1990s. It now renders text between most major world languages accurately enough for everyday practical use, instantly and at no cost, a service that once required an expensive and hard-to-find human translator and, for less common language pairs, frequently could not be obtained at all.

Weather forecasting has improved to the point where, by estimates widely cited in the meteorological literature, a modern five-day forecast is roughly as reliable as a one-day forecast was around 1980. The change carries direct and considerable value for farmers, sailors, and anyone planning outdoor work, all of whom once relied largely on folk observation and guesswork, and all of whom have absorbed the four extra days without ceremony.

Photography remained, for decades after its invention in the 1830s, a slow, expensive, and technically demanding craft, requiring long exposures and a darkroom, available chiefly to professionals and the rich. The camera built into an ordinary phone now records an image instantly at no marginal cost, and family record-keeping, once a rare formal occasion involving best clothes and held breath, has become a constant unremarkable habit.

Satellite navigation was unavailable to civilians before the American GPS system was progressively opened to non-military use in the 1980s and 1990s. It has since replaced dead reckoning, paper charts, and local knowledge as the ordinary means of finding one's way, free on any smartphone and accurate to within a few metres almost anywhere on earth.

Recorded sound and video once demanded specialised equipment few households could own, and the music available to a family was the music someone in the room could play. An ordinary person today has effortless access to a range of music, film, and instruction that a wealthy household a century ago could not have assembled at any price; an evening of music that once required an orchestra in the room now requires nothing but the wish for one.

Internet access, essentially nonexistent as a consumer service before the mid-1990s, when well under 1 percent of the world's population had ever been online, now reaches roughly two-thirds of humanity by International Telecommunication Union estimates, putting the reference and communication tools described throughout this section within reach of billions of people who had no equivalent a single generation ago.

A patient's own medical records and test results were once mediated almost entirely through a physician, who might disclose as much or as little as judgement suggested. Patient portals and legal rights of access have given ordinary patients in many countries a degree of direct insight into their own health information that even wealthy patients rarely had as recently as the late twentieth century.

For people who are blind or have low vision, the written word was, for most of history, essentially out of reach beyond a small number of laboriously hand-transcribed texts, and even after Louis Braille's system emerged in the 1820s the range of available material stayed narrow for more than a century. Text-to-speech software and audiobooks now make the great majority of published text instantly accessible to anyone, sighted or not, at negligible cost.

Sequencing the first human genome took an international consortium roughly thirteen years and a budget on the order of three billion dollars, finishing in 2003. The same read-out of a person's DNA can now be produced commercially for a few hundred dollars in a matter of days, a price collapse of roughly a million-fold in twenty years, and one on which a growing share of modern cancer diagnosis and rare-disease medicine quietly depends.

Violence, Safety, and Governance

Even the calamitous wars of the twentieth century, including both World Wars, killed a smaller share of the world's population than many pre-modern and early modern conflicts killed of theirs, once death tolls are measured per capita rather than in absolute numbers. Steven Pinker's analysis in The Better Angels of Our Nature ranks several tribal and early state conflicts, along with the Mongol conquests and the eighth-century An Lushan rebellion in China, above both World Wars by this measure, though the underlying ancient estimates are, as he concedes, rough.

War deaths per capita worldwide have fallen further still since 1945, across a period some historians call the long peace, during which direct war between major powers has been avoided even as smaller and civil conflicts, some horrific in their own right, have continued to cause real and serious harm that the aggregate trend should not be allowed to obscure.

Homicide rates in Western Europe fell by somewhere between a factor of ten and a factor of fifty from the late medieval period to the present, depending on the country and period compared, one of the best-documented long-run trends in historical criminology, resting on court and coroner records assembled by scholars such as Manuel Eisner across multiple national archives; a fourteenth-century Oxford or Florence was, by these records, more murderous than almost any large city in the modern West.

Judicial torture was once a routine and legally sanctioned part of criminal investigation across much of Europe and elsewhere, used to extract confessions as standard procedure, and public execution long served as civic entertainment drawing large holiday crowds. Both have been abolished as ordinary instruments of state power across most of the world, surviving chiefly in a small number of jurisdictions and, wretchedly, in various illegal or extrajudicial forms.

At the start of the nineteenth century, only a small handful of imperfect democracies existed anywhere, and universal suffrage existed nowhere at all. A substantial majority of the world's states now hold meaningfully competitive elections, though the honest ledger entry must also record real recent backsliding: several respected indices, including those of Freedom House and the V-Dem Institute, have for roughly fifteen years reported more countries moving toward authoritarianism than away from it.

Traffic deaths per mile travelled have fallen substantially in wealthy countries over recent decades, in the United States by roughly ninety percent per mile since the 1920s, despite an enormous rise in total distance driven. The credit belongs to seatbelt laws, crumple zones, airbags, drink-driving enforcement, and better road design, each of which arrived only after considerable public argument about its cost and necessity, arguments that have aged less well than the seatbelts.

A clear majority of the world's countries have now abolished the death penalty in law or in practice, a shift concentrated heavily in the past half century and often tied closely to broader democratic transitions; Amnesty International counts more than two-thirds of states as abolitionist by one measure or the other. It remains in active use in a shrinking number of jurisdictions.

Corporal punishment in schools, once close to universal and rarely questioned as anything but ordinary discipline, has been banned by law in a large and growing number of countries, a movement usually dated from Sweden's pioneering 1979 ban on the physical punishment of children even in the home, and extended since through most of Europe and well beyond, to more than sixty countries in law and many more in practice.

Wars of outright territorial conquest among major powers, once so routine a feature of international relations that no special justification was thought necessary, have become markedly rarer since 1945, a change the political scientist John Mueller and others attribute in part to a real shift in international norms rather than to deterrence alone. The norm has been visibly tested in recent years and, in at least one prominent case, violated outright.

Legal protection against domestic and sexual violence has expanded considerably within living memory. Marital rape was not criminalised in some form across all fifty American states until 1993, and remains uncriminalised or only partially criminalised in a number of countries today, where the law still treats a wife's consent as given once and for all.

Piracy and slave raiding were for centuries endemic hazards of sea and coastal life across large parts of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean, common enough that whole coastal populations built their settlements, watchtowers, and daily habits around the risk. Suppression campaigns in the nineteenth century and modern naval patrols have reduced the problem to a comparatively marginal and geographically concentrated one.

Food safety regulation, including the routine inspection of meat, dairy, and produce, has sharply reduced food-borne illness and mass contamination compared with the largely unregulated supply chains of the nineteenth century, an era in which milk was routinely watered and adulterated, and which Upton Sinclair described vividly, if polemically, in his 1906 novel The Jungle, a book that itself helped prompt the first American federal food safety laws that same year.

Deaths from fire have fallen substantially per capita in wealthy countries over the twentieth century, the work of building codes, smoke detectors, fire-resistant materials, and organised professional fire brigades, which did not exist in their modern, publicly funded form in most cities before the nineteenth century; before that, a fire was fought by whoever came running with buckets. The smoke detector, a small and unglamorous device, does a disproportionate amount of quiet, unnoticed work on the ceiling of nearly every room.

Consumer product safety regulation, including mandatory recalls, childproof packaging, poison control hotlines, and testing before goods reach the market, has meaningfully reduced accidental poisoning, choking, and injury from ordinary household goods compared with the unregulated markets of a century ago, in which a household simply bore the risk of whatever it bought, and lye, laudanum, and rat poison stood on open shelves in ordinary kitchens with few warnings of any kind.

Forensic DNA analysis, first applied in a criminal investigation in the mid-1980s in England, has since been used to exonerate several hundred wrongly convicted people in the United States alone, through the work of the Innocence Project and similar organisations. That kind of correction was simply unavailable at any earlier point in legal history, when a conviction, once secured, was far harder to unmake.

The treatment of prisoners of war and of civilians in wartime was once left almost entirely to the customs and mercy of the victor. The Geneva Conventions, the first dating to 1864 and the body of them substantially expanded after each World War, gave the world its first widely accepted legal standard for the treatment of the wounded, the captured, and the civilian caught in the middle of a war. The conventions are imperfectly observed. A standard imperfectly observed is still a standard, and before them there was none.

Deaths from natural disasters, floods, droughts, storms, and earthquakes together, have fallen by roughly ninety percent or more per decade since the 1920s by Our World in Data's compilation of disaster records, even as world population quadrupled, because early-warning systems, sturdier buildings, and faster relief now stand between a hazard and a catastrophe; the hazard itself has not softened, and in the case of weather is worsening, but the toll it takes has.

Travel, Distance, and Connection

Crossing the Atlantic by sailing ship in the eighteenth century commonly took four to eight weeks depending on wind and weather, and the crossing itself was a physical danger, with real risk of shipwreck, disease, or short rations en route. Steamships had cut the passage to roughly a week by the 1920s; a commercial jet crosses the same ocean today in under eight hours, over a cup of coffee and a film.

Commercial aviation has become dramatically safer over its own lifetime: fatal accident rates per mile flown have fallen by roughly two orders of magnitude since the early jet age of the 1960s, according to figures tracked by aviation safety organisations, making flying, mile for mile, one of the safest ways an ordinary traveller can move at all. The fear of it has held up rather better.

Magellan's expedition needed just under three years, 1519 to 1522, to complete the first recorded circumnavigation of the globe, at the cost of most of the fleet and crew, Magellan himself included. Jules Verne's fictional wager of a circumnavigation in eighty days, published in 1872, struck contemporaries as a splendid improbability; an ordinary commercial itinerary today circles the globe in under two days of actual flying time.

A transatlantic telephone call, on the rare occasions it was possible at all before the mid-twentieth century, cost a substantial sum for a few minutes and required advance booking through an operator, a service reserved for emergencies and business necessity. Voice and video across the same distance are now effectively free, instantaneous, and available on demand from the phone in any pocket, so that a grandmother in Manila watches her grandchild in Toronto take a first step as it happens.

The shipping container, standardised and driven to adoption by the American trucking entrepreneur Malcom McLean from 1956 onward, cut the cost and time of loading cargo ships so dramatically, from days of gang labour on the docks to hours of crane work, that economic historians credit it as one of the largest single causes of the collapse in global freight costs and the explosion of international trade in the decades that followed, a claim on history that a corrugated steel box carries lightly.

Postage in early nineteenth-century Britain was priced by distance and by the sheet, paid by the recipient, and dear enough that an ordinary family treated a letter as an event, or arranged marks on the cover in advance so that the news could be read at the door and the letter itself politely declined; Rowland Hill's Penny Post reform of 1840, which carried any letter anywhere in the country for a flat penny paid by the sender, multiplied the volume of correspondence within a few years. Email and messaging have since made both the speed and the cost of the written word over any distance a non-issue for everyday use.

The private automobile, a rich man's novelty at the start of the twentieth century, is now owned by a majority of households in most wealthy countries, a change driven by the mass production methods Henry Ford introduced with the Model T, which cut the real price of a car so far relative to wages that his own factory workers famously became his customers.

Refrigerated shipping and rail, spreading from the late nineteenth century onward, allowed fresh meat, dairy, and produce to travel thousands of miles without spoiling, so that Argentine beef and New Zealand butter could feed London. The development transformed diets and whole agricultural economies in ways that had been physically impossible before the technology existed at all.

Passenger rail compressed journeys that had taken days by horse-drawn coach into a matter of hours as it spread across Europe and North America in the nineteenth century, astonishing contemporaries with speeds no human being had ever experienced; respectable opinion warned in print that the human frame might not tolerate thirty miles an hour, and the frame, in the event, raised no objection. The automobile and then the aeroplane overtook it in turn, each step shrinking the time cost of ordinary distance further than the one before.

Indoor plumbing and municipal water systems, absent from the great majority of homes as recently as 1900 even in wealthy cities, are now standard across the developed world, ending the daily labour, performed overwhelmingly by women and children, of hauling water from a well or a public pump, often over considerable distance and several times a day.

Freedom of movement across national borders within certain regional blocs, most visibly the Schengen Area covering most of continental Europe since 1995, now lets several hundred million people cross what were once guarded frontiers without so much as showing a passport, a casualness that would have astonished a traveller from the era of fixed border posts and exit visas only a few decades earlier.

The cost of moving freight by sea, measured per ton per mile, has fallen dramatically in real terms over the past century, driven by containerisation, larger and more efficient vessels, and computerised logistics. That fall sits invisibly behind much of the cheapness of ordinary imported goods recorded elsewhere in this ledger, and most consumers never see it directly at all.

The bicycle, brought to a practical and affordable form in the 1890s with the safety frame and the pneumatic tyre, was the first machine in history to give an ordinary person, and pointedly an ordinary woman, cheap independent range beyond walking distance; contemporaries credited it with loosening chaperonage and even broadening the marriage pool of the rural village, and the reformer Susan B. Anthony is widely quoted as saying it had done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. Sermons were preached against it, which is generally a reliable sign.

International tourist arrivals numbered roughly 25 million in 1950, by United Nations tourism figures; by 2019 the count had grown to about 1.4 billion a year. Whatever one thinks of what mass tourism does to the places it loves, the sight of another country, once a rich family's grand tour, has become an experience available to a meaningful fraction of the whole human species.

Everyday Comfort and Domestic Life

Central heating has replaced the constant tending of coal or wood fires in individual rooms, which even comfortable homes required as recently as the early twentieth century while the rest of the house stood cold. The great majority of housing across wealthy countries now delivers even, automatic warmth throughout, at the turn of a dial, and a child raised in such a house has no idea what an ice-flowered bedroom window looks like from the inside.

Artificial light before gas and electricity was so dim, expensive, and dangerous, an open flame in a wooden house, that it sharply limited the hours in which reading, close needlework, or any detailed evening work could be done at all. Electric light removed the limit entirely, extending the useful day by several hours for anyone who wants them, at negligible cost and no fire risk worth the name.

Cooking over open wood or coal fires, still common in poorer households of industrialised countries as recently as the early twentieth century and still the daily practice of a substantial share of humanity today, fills a house with smoke that public health researchers link to serious respiratory illness and millions of premature deaths worldwide each year. Gas and electric stoves have removed that hazard from the great majority of kitchens in wealthy countries; extending the same change to the rest of the world remains unfinished business.

Reliable contraception under an individual's own control was effectively unavailable before the oral contraceptive pill, approved in the United States in 1960. It gave ordinary people a command over the timing and number of their children that no earlier generation possessed as a matter of routine personal choice rather than chance or abstinence, and demographers trace a substantial share of women's subsequent entry into the professions to exactly this change.

Routine dental care, regular checkups, fillings, and preventive fluoride, has sharply reduced tooth loss compared with earlier centuries, when losing most or all of one's teeth by middle age was common even among the wealthy, who resorted to early and crude dentures; George Washington's famous set was carved from ivory and human teeth, not wood, a correction that does not much improve the picture. Water fluoridation, begun in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945, is credited with a further large reduction in childhood cavities across entire populations.

Eyeglasses, though invented centuries earlier, remained a relatively costly and often poorly fitted item until mass production and modern optometry made corrective lenses cheap and precise. Reading glasses that once required a skilled craftsman now hang on a rack in any pharmacy for the price of a meal, and the difference between reading and not reading in later life has become, for most people, trivially purchasable.

Hearing aids have progressed from bulky, expensive, and often stigmatised devices, worn reluctantly if at all, to small, effective, and increasingly affordable ones, lately sold over the counter in the United States. They meaningfully restore a sense whose loss once meant a slow and isolating decline, the sufferer cut off by degrees from ordinary conversation at their own table.

Home refrigeration sharply reduced the health burden of spoiled food, a routine and serious hazard, particularly in hot weather, before mechanical refrigeration reached ordinary households in the middle decades of the twentieth century. Fresh produce, meat, and dairy could be kept for days or weeks rather than hours, and the icebox, the block ice delivery round, and the compulsory daily market trip all disappeared within roughly a single generation, so completely that they now require explaining; the ice itself had in earlier decades been cut from New England ponds and shipped as far as Calcutta, where enough of it survived the voyage to be sold.

The combined effect of the washing machine, the vacuum cleaner, which ended the beating of carpets by hand outdoors, the dishwasher, and running hot water is estimated by some economic historians to have cut daily domestic labour by several hours for a typical household compared with a century ago. That time has been redirected, however unevenly across households and across the sexes who once bore the labour, toward paid work, education, leisure, and the raising of children; the Cambridge economist Ha-Joon Chang has argued, only half in jest, that the washing machine changed the world more than the internet.

Telephone access has moved within a single lifetime from a landline shared by a household or a whole neighbourhood, and absent altogether across most of the developing world as late as the 1990s, to a personal mobile handset owned by a clear majority of adults on earth. Global mobile subscriptions now exceed the world's population, by International Telecommunication Union figures, and instant personal communication reaches villages that never had a wired network at all, having skipped that stage entirely.

Airborne lead from leaded petrol, emitted in enormous and largely unregulated quantities from ordinary cars for half a century, is a neurotoxin linked to measurable losses in childhood cognitive development. Average blood lead levels in American children fell by roughly four-fifths between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and by more than nine-tenths since, following the phased ban on leaded fuel, one of the most quietly consequential public health interventions of the twentieth century.

Nearly half of all American homes recorded in the 1940 census lacked complete plumbing, meaning hot piped water, a private flush toilet, and a bath or shower; the privy in the yard was an ordinary fixture of town as well as farm life within the memory of people still living. By the late twentieth century the share had fallen to under one percent, a transformation of daily dignity, and of what had until then been a luxury of the rich with servants, that rarely makes any list of great inventions.

Urban air in the coal-burning cities of the industrial West was, within living memory, lethal on its worst days: London's great smog of December 1952 killed several thousand people within weeks by contemporary reckoning, and as many as ten to twelve thousand by later epidemiological estimates, and led directly to Britain's Clean Air Act of 1956. Concentrations of soot and sulphur dioxide in London, Pittsburgh, and comparable cities have since fallen by upward of ninety percent, so far that the fogs of Dickens and Sherlock Holmes now read as atmosphere rather than as the public health data they actually were.

What the Ledger Shows, and What It Does Not

Read straight through, the ledger makes a case that is hard to argue with on its own terms: on nearly every measure that can be counted, an ordinary person alive today is safer, healthier, freer, better fed, and more connected than an ordinary person, or in many respects even a spectacularly wealthy person, at almost any earlier point in history. The economist Donald Boudreaux has pressed a version of this argument for years in his Christmas essays at Cafe Hayek, weighing an ordinary modern shopping basket against what history's richest men could never have bought at any price, and economists take the argument seriously; it was not assembled to flatter the present. The entries above did not need to be invented or stretched; if anything, the harder task was choosing which hundred and twenty to include out of the many more that could reasonably have been added.

But a ledger, however careful its entries, is still only one kind of account, and this one has three limits. The first is distribution. Averages and aggregates flatten unevenly shared gains. A global fall in extreme poverty is real and enormous, yet it coexists with regions, and with people inside every country including the richest, for whom stagnation or outright decline is the lived experience of recent decades. A ledger built from averages can sound like triumphalism to someone whose wages have not moved in ten years, and that reaction is not ingratitude; a man is not confused about his own life merely because the mean disagrees with him.

The second limit is the bias of the measuring instruments themselves. The time-price method that makes several of these entries possible shines brightest exactly where markets are best at cheapening things: tradable, priced, manufactured commodities, metals, food staples, cloth, light. It is comparatively silent on the goods that determine how a life actually feels and that have, in real or time-price terms, grown dearer rather than cheaper over the same period: housing in the cities where the work is, medical care and the care of the old, childcare, and in some countries higher education. A fair set of books records these entries on the other side of the page instead of counting only its winnings and moving briskly past its losses. And beyond the mispriced lies the unpriced altogether: a stable climate, which the very growth celebrated here has measurably disturbed, and whose bill will be presented, unevenly, largely to people not yet born; the thick weave of extended family and settled neighbourhood that several of these same changes loosened even as they enriched the households inside it; the ordinary confidence of belonging somewhere, which no index has ever managed to track, and whose apparent decline in wealthy countries is among the few trends of our era running visibly the wrong way.

The third limit is fragility, and it may be the most important. Nearly every entry in this ledger describes something maintained, not something achieved once and banked forever. Measles returns wherever vaccination lapses; the norm against conquest holds only while enough powers are willing to enforce it; the democratic gains of two centuries have been receding, by the count of every serious index, for over a decade. A ledger of stocks says nothing about the upkeep of the assets, and every asset listed here has upkeep. The reader should therefore resist the most tempting misuse of a document like this one, which is to wield it as a debating trick: answering a specific present grievance, a stagnant wage, an unaffordable rent, a broken clinic, with an unrelated fact about penicillin, as though gratitude toward the nineteenth century were a substitute for repairing the twenty-first. It is not. Progress on one axis is no rebuttal to a legitimate complaint on another, and a person who is right that her city has become unaffordable is not made wrong by being reminded that her telephone would have amazed a king.

None of this is a reason to discard the ledger; it is the reason to trust it. An account that admits what it cannot measure is worth more, not less, than one that claims to measure everything. The entries are real. The gains are real. They were made by particular people doing particular work, most of them unthanked and many of them doubted at the time, and they will last exactly as long as someone keeps doing that work. A list this long earns the right to be believed only by saying, just as plainly, where its authority runs out.
