The Future, Unevenly Distributed

The Arcade

William Gibson wrote the book that gave the world its dominant vision of cyberspace, and named an entire genre in the process, on a manual typewriter. He did not own a computer and did not much understand what one did; he has said so in more interviews than anyone has bothered to count. This is not a writer's false modesty. He has been specific about it. He did not know, when he wrote Neuromancer, what a byte was for in any operational sense. He had seen the outsides of a few machines and had read enough magazine copy to borrow their vocabulary, but the actual mechanics of computation were as opaque to him as they are to most people who use computers every day without the faintest idea what happens inside the case. What he did have, and what he has described at length across four decades of interviews, was a memory of standing outside video arcades in Vancouver in the very early 1980s, watching teenagers play. Not playing himself, particularly. Watching. And what caught his attention was not the games, which even by the standards of a few years later were primitive, blocky, unconvincing. It was the bodies of the kids playing them. They leaned in. They hunched over the cabinets with a kind of physical longing, shoulders forward, faces lit by the screen, as though the glass were a membrane they wished they could push through. It is the posture in which most of humanity now conducts its waking hours, with the difference that the arcade required you to stand. He has described this image, or some close variant of it, as the actual origin of cyberspace: not a technical vision at all, but a bodily one, a picture of desire aimed at a machine.

Almost everything else follows from that scene. The most influential piece of technological prophecy in late twentieth-century fiction, a book so thoroughly credited with predicting the internet that the credit has become background noise nobody bothers to argue with anymore, was not built out of technical knowledge at all. It was built out of an observation about human longing, made by a broke, watchful young man loitering near an arcade because he had nowhere better to be and a novel he did not yet know how to write. Gibson was not extrapolating a data network from existing computer architecture. He could not have done that if he had tried; he lacked the vocabulary. He was extrapolating a psychological state, the state of wanting so badly to be inside a machine that your whole body tips toward it, into a world where that wanting had been granted. Cyberspace, in Neuromancer, is not a technically plausible network. It is arcade hunger given a geography. And that scene contains, compressed, the whole claim I want to make about Gibson. His real achievement was to convert the future from a time into a place: not a date that must be awaited, but a location that already exists, unevenly, at the margins of the present, and that can be visited by anyone willing to go and look. That conversion demotes prophecy and promotes observation. It, and not any particular prediction that happened to come true, is his actual legacy, and it is the foundation of a method: the future is found by looking, not predicted by forecasting.

What, exactly, did he see there? The specifics are the argument, and Gibson has told and retold them for nearly half a century. The arcades themselves were unglamorous places, strip mall storefronts and bus station corners in a Vancouver that was, in the early 1980s, still a fairly modest regional city rather than the glass-towered Pacific metropolis it later became. He was not a games journalist and had no professional reason to be there, which left him, to anyone who noticed, a grown man standing outside an arcade. He simply found himself drawn back, again and again, to the kids playing Asteroids and the early vector-graphics shooters of the period, games whose actual content, seen from any distance, amounted to almost nothing: a handful of lines of light moving against a black field. The score never held him, nor the strategy. What held him was the unmistakable body language of absorption, the way the whole ordinary apparatus of a teenager's self-consciousness, the wariness, the performing for friends, the sideways checking of who might be watching, would simply switch off in front of the screen, leaving a face slack and rapt at once. Watching this, he has said in one phrasing or another, he became convinced the kids believed, or behaved as though they believed, that there was an actual space behind the glass, a there there, and that the game itself was only a narrow porthole onto it. Nobody had built that space. Nobody, in 1981, had the faintest technical means of building it. But the wanting was completely real, and Gibson has been explicit, across many separate tellings of the story, that it was the wanting, not any existing or even plausible technology, that he eventually set out to describe.

The mythology that has grown up around the book leaves out the material conditions of its composition, which point the same way. Gibson wrote Neuromancer largely on a Hermes 2000, a Swiss portable typewriter already decades old when he acquired it, the sort of solid, unglamorous machine a travelling correspondent might once have carried, and one on which the future of computing had to be typed quite hard, working in a rented house in Vancouver while his young family's finances remained precarious enough that the advance from Ace Books, modest even by genre paperback standards, mattered a great deal to him. He has described real doubt during the writing, including the panic set off by seeing Blade Runner partway through the manuscript, an episode I will come back to, and he has said more than once that he assumed, going in, the book would do roughly what his short fiction had already done: sell respectably within the genre and quietly disappear. He was not a technologist toying with fiction as a side project, testing out ideas he already half understood from the inside. He was a working, moderately anxious novelist without savings, borrowing the vocabulary of computing the way a costume designer borrows the silhouette of a uniform he has never actually worn: from the outside, by observation and inference, getting the shape right without necessarily getting the stitching right. And it is precisely that outsider's eye, unburdened by technical correctness, that let him see past the machinery to the feeling underneath it.

The popular version of William Gibson, the version that turns up in newspaper profiles and product launch keynotes and the kind of magazine listicle that ranks science fiction writers by how many of their inventions came true, is the version of a man who predicted the internet. It is not an absurd claim. He coined the word cyberspace. He wrote, in 1984, about a globally networked, immersive, corporately balkanised information space years before most people had heard of the internet at all, let alone imagined logging into one. But the claim, taken at face value, gets Gibson wrong in a way that matters, and getting him wrong in this particular way has obscured something much more useful than the compliment it intends. Gibson has never, in any interview I am aware of, across nearly fifty years of being asked the question in every possible phrasing, accepted the label of prophet with anything but discomfort, and often with something closer to visible irritation. His answer, offered many times and in many forms, runs like this: he was not predicting the technical apparatus of the internet at all; his own specifics were mostly wrong (there is no cyberspace deck you jack a socket into behind your ear, there was for a long time no equivalent of the Sprawl's dense, seamless, sensorially total data-space, and plenty of Neuromancer's hardware reads today as charmingly analogue, all chrome and neon and payphones); and what people are actually responding to when they call him a prophet is something else entirely, an accurate reading of the mood and social arrangement of a moment that had not quite arrived yet, dressed, as all science fiction eventually is, in the costume of the future.

The gift Gibson actually has, and it is a much stranger and more useful gift than clairvoyance, is closer to an anthropologist's than an engineer's. He notices, faster and more precisely than almost anyone else writing in his lifetime, which fragments of a barely emerging present are about to become everybody's ordinary life. He does this not by modelling technology forward from first principles but by watching people, usually people at the edges of respectable attention, and taking their behaviour seriously as evidence. Put more sharply, Gibson quietly converted the future from a time into a place: not a date to be awaited but a location that can, with some effort and no small discomfort, be visited now. That conversion changes who is qualified to know the future. The prophet loses the job, and the observer gets it. This is a method, not a talent that arrives by inspiration, and it is a method with direct descendants far outside science fiction, including in how I have tried, for the better part of two decades and most explicitly in my book Look, to think about where culture is actually heading. That connection is not incidental. Gibson and the method turn out, on inspection, to be the same subject wearing different clothes.

A Life Observed from the Edge

The biography helps explain the vantage point, though it should not be leaned on too hard, since Gibson himself has always been faintly suspicious of biographical explanations for a writer's work, on the reasonable grounds that everyone has a childhood and almost nobody's produces Neuromancer. Still, the facts supply useful context, and they can be set down briskly.

William Ford Gibson was born in March 1948 in Conway, South Carolina, and spent most of his childhood in Wytheville, a small town in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, after his father, a construction supervisor, died when Gibson was a small boy. He has described an isolated, bookish, restless adolescence, the kind that produces either accountants or novelists, spent largely alone with the science fiction paperbacks that were the one form of imaginative escape a small Appalachian town of the 1950s and early 1960s reliably offered a strange child. He was sent, in his teens, to a private school, from which he was in due course expelled, an episode he has referred to in interviews without ever quite dwelling on it, in the manner of a man who regards his own adolescence as a country he is glad to have left. His mother died while he was still a teenager. What followed was a few unmoored years: drifting through the edges of the counterculture in the late 1960s, spending time in places where a young American of draft age might plausibly avoid being sent to Vietnam, and eventually, in 1968, crossing into Canada for good.

He has told, on more than one occasion, essentially the same story of discovering William Burroughs as a young teenager in Wytheville: finding a paperback copy of Naked Lunch, or hearing enough about its reputation to go looking for one, and experiencing it less as literature in any schoolroom sense than as contraband, a signal from a world entirely unlike the one visible from a small Virginia town in the early 1960s. The effect of reading Burroughs at that age, he has said, was not primarily about plot or character but about permission: the discovery that prose could be assembled from fragments lifted wholesale from advertising copy, pulp fiction, and technical manuals, arranged by a method closer to montage than to narrative, and that the collage could still add up to something with real force. This was, on Gibson's own later account, among the most important technical lessons of his entire education as a writer, arriving years before he had any idea he would become one and from a source no school in Wytheville would have handed out, and it shows up directly in Neuromancer's own jump-cut sentences, its habit of dropping the reader into a scene already in progress and trusting context to assemble itself rather than pausing to explain.

After those unmoored years, and without any dramatic conversion, he settled first in Toronto, where he has said he spent time on the margins of the Yorkville hippie scene, another arcade, in its way, another place where he seems to have functioned mainly as an observer of other people's intensity rather than a full participant in it. In 1972 he moved to Vancouver, met the woman who would become his wife, and has lived there, by his own account contentedly, ever since. It was in Vancouver, married and with a young family to support, that he drifted, almost by accident, into a science fiction course at the University of British Columbia taught by Susan Wood, an experience he has cited as the actual beginning of his writing life. He has described the course less as instruction in technique, which he mostly picked up afterward by trial and error, than as a permission slip: proof that people he respected took the genre seriously as a place where real literary work could happen, rather than dismissing it as a lesser aisle of the bookshop. His first professional sale, a short story called "Fragments of a Hologram Rose," appeared in 1977. "Johnny Mnemonic" followed in 1981 (it was later made into a film; the story survived), alongside "The Gernsback Continuum," a story about a photographer haunted by hallucinatory visions of 1930s futurism that is itself an early, almost programmatic statement of Gibson's lifelong suspicion of confident, streamlined images of tomorrow. "Burning Chrome," the story that first used the word cyberspace in print, followed in 1982 and functioned, in retrospect, as the final workshop in which Neuromancer's voice was built, story by story, before the novel existed even as a plan.

What Gibson was reading during these years matters too, since it shaped the sentences more directly than any of the biographical incident usually recounted in profiles. Burroughs, as already described, came first and stayed longest, a standing licence for prose that could jump between registers, between advertising copy and technical jargon and hardboiled dialogue, without ever pausing to smooth the seams. He has cited Thomas Pynchon as another formative influence, and the elliptical, paranoid, brand-saturated attentiveness of Pynchon's fiction is not hard to hear underneath Gibson's own. He has also acknowledged, though usually with a note of friendly rivalry, his debt to J. G. Ballard, whose fiction of the 1960s and 1970s had already begun treating the psychological effects of consumer technology and mass media as a subject worthy of the same close attention a more conventional novelist might give to marriage or inheritance. None of these influences was science-fictional in the narrow, gadget-forecasting sense. They were stylistic and observational influences, teaching Gibson how to look at a shopping mall or a television advertisement and see it as freighted with meaning rather than as background noise, which is precisely the habit of attention that runs through the whole of his career.

No single plot point of the biography counts for as much as its overall geometry: an American who became, by his own repeated account, a sharper and more comfortable observer of American culture for having spent more than fifty years watching it from just the other side of a border. Gibson has described Canada, and Vancouver specifically, as a useful vantage point precisely because it is close enough to receive the full broadcast signal of American culture, its television, its advertising, its political noise, its consumer abundance, while standing just outside the room where that culture is produced. This is not patriotism or its opposite. It is a working position, the same working position, structurally, that a good field anthropologist occupies: near enough to see clearly, far enough away not to be swallowed by the assumptions of the people being observed. Notice that a writer credited with predicting the technological future spent his whole career as a kind of resident alien, professionally and geographically both. That is very probably not a coincidence.

What Neuromancer Actually Did

Neuromancer was published in 1984 by Ace Books, a mass-market paperback original, part of an editorial line specifically designed to give young writers of speculative fiction their first shot at a full-length novel. Nobody involved, least of all Gibson, appears to have expected it to do anything more than sell modestly and let its author go on to write a second book, which was the whole of what the line had been set up to do. Instead it swept the field's three major honours in a single cycle, the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award, a combination no debut novel had achieved before and few books of any kind have achieved since. It has not been out of print in the forty years since.

The plot, stripped down, is a fairly conventional heist story wearing an unconventional coat. Case is a burnt-out console cowboy, the novel's own term for a hacker who works by jacking his nervous system directly into a data network, exiled to the port city of Chiba after being caught stealing from an employer and punished by having his nervous system chemically damaged so that he can no longer enter cyberspace at all, a punishment the novel treats, correctly, as something close to death for a man whose whole identity is built on that access. He is recruited by a mysterious, damaged patron named Armitage, offered a cure and a job, and drawn, along with a razor-fingered mercenary named Molly Millions, into a heist whose real target turns out not to be money or data at all but the completion of something much stranger: the fusion of two artificial intelligences, Wintermute and Neuromancer, corporate-owned entities straining against the legal architecture built to keep them fragmented and governable, into a single, unified, barely comprehensible new kind of mind.

The world Gibson builds around that plot is where the novel does its actual work. Atmosphere is the wrong word for it; the thing has furniture. Neuromancer opens in the port city of Chiba, on a strip called Ninsei, in a bar called the Chatsubo, with a sentence that has since become one of the most quoted openings in American fiction: the sky above the port, Gibson wrote, was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel. Notice what that sentence actually does. It does not describe technology at all. It describes a sky, the oldest possible subject for a descriptive sentence, in the borrowed vocabulary of a household appliance, and in doing so it tells the reader, before any plot has started, that the entire perceptual apparatus of this world has been colonised by media technology so completely that even the weather gets described in its terms. Molly Millions, the razor-girl who partners Case through the novel, carries retractable blades under her fingernails and has had her eyes replaced with permanently mirrored lenses, a modification that lets her see in conditions no unmodified eye could manage and that also, not incidentally, makes her own expression permanently unreadable: tactical advantage and armour against being seen, in a single piece of surgery. The heist eventually takes the reader inside Villa Straylight, the baroque, decaying orbital habitat of the Tessier-Ashpool family, a clan of inbred, cryogenically prolonged corporate aristocrats whose youngest surviving member, 3Jane, has spent her isolated life designing the very defences Case and his crew have to break through. The crew is rounded out by Peter Riviera, a gifted, sociopathic performance artist capable of projecting holographic illusions directly from his own nervous system, whose loyalty nobody trusts and who betrays the others more or less exactly when the plot needs him to, and by the Zionites, a community of Rastafarian space tug operators living in a cluster called Zion whose slower, older, more communal relationship to technology stands in the novel as the one significant counter-image to the corporate world's cold acceleration. Presiding over all of it, at least nominally, is the Turing Police, the novel's one real gesture toward institutional regulation, an agency charged with preventing exactly the merger the plot races toward, and which turns out, by the book's end, to have had no power to stop it.

Brand-saturated prose sounds like empty praise until you watch it working on the page. Gibson names his hardware the way a novelist of manners names clothing labels, not to explain how anything functions but to place it precisely within a hierarchy of taste and cost that any reader recognises instantly from consumer life, even a reader with no idea what the object actually does. Case's deck is an Ono-Sendai Cyberspace Seven, a wholly invented name assembled from plausible Japanese syllables at a moment when Japanese electronics firms, Sony and Panasonic and their competitors, had become for American consumers a byword for a certain kind of sleek, faintly intimidating technical superiority. The name specifies nothing and means nothing, and readers have wanted one for forty years. Gibson has said, describing this technique in interviews, that he was consciously imitating the way advertising already worked on consumers of the early 1980s, in which a brand name did the emotional labour that a technical specification never could, and that he saw no reason fiction should not use the same shorthand rather than invent and explain its machines from first principles. The effect, replicated across hundreds of small details, drugs sold under brand names, corporations with instantly legible personalities, fashion described by label rather than by cut, is a world that feels thoroughly, exhaustingly commercial in exactly the way the actual world of 1984 was starting to feel, and the technique has since been borrowed by nearly every writer of near-future fiction, so thoroughly that it no longer reads as innovation at all, only as how the genre is done.

None of this is why the book matters. Gibson himself has acknowledged, in interviews across the years, that Neuromancer's story is a fairly standard noir caper, borrowed consciously from the hardboiled tradition of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, transplanted into a future setting the way a director might transplant a stage play into modern dress, an operation that leaves the plot exactly where it was and moves everything else. What makes Neuromancer an event in the history of the novel, rather than merely a well-regarded genre entry, is not the plot but the texture: the density and specificity of the imagined world, the confident, elliptical, brand-saturated prose that never pauses to explain itself, and above all the vocabulary the book minted almost in passing and that the world has never given back.

Cyberspace itself had already appeared, in embryonic form, in "Burning Chrome" two years earlier, but it received its full elaboration and its enduring definition in Neuromancer's opening chapters, in a sentence that has by now achieved the peculiar status of being more famous than the book that contains it: cyberspace, Gibson wrote, is "a consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators," a "graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system," "unthinkable complexity," "lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data." Set that sentence beside the actual internet that exists today, a thing of search bars and loading spinners and login screens, and the mismatch is immediate and almost comic. Nobody has ever experienced the internet as a consensual hallucination of glowing geometric light. What Gibson got right was not the machinery. What he got right was the felt experience of a mediated space that people would come to treat as more real, more urgently present, than the room they were physically sitting in, a claim that in 1984 was closer to science fiction than to sociology and is now so obviously true of daily life that it has stopped sounding like a claim at all.

The word was born, though, in a short story, which usually gets a passing mention and no more. "Burning Chrome" appeared in the July 1982 issue of Omni magazine, a glossy newsstand publication that mixed science journalism with science fiction and paid well enough to be, for writers of Gibson's generation, a coveted market. The magazine was owned by the publisher of Penthouse, a provenance the field had agreed not to dwell on, the rates being what they were. The story is a tight, self-contained heist, considerably smaller in scope than Neuromancer but built from many of the same working parts, evidence that Gibson had already assembled most of his mature toolkit two years before the novel that made his name. Its narrator, Automatic Jack, is a hardware specialist, a builder of custom cyberspace decks, partnered with a console cowboy named Bobby Quine who is, in most of the ways that matter, an early sketch for Case: brilliant, self-destructive, chasing one last score to fund an escape from a life that has already started to close in on him. The job is a burglary of a data fortress belonging to a sinister figure named Chrome, a mob-connected fixer whose electronic defences the two men breach using a piece of software called an icebreaker, direct ancestor of the ice-breaking programs that structure Neuromancer's climactic run. The story's emotional centre, though, is not the heist itself but Bobby's girlfriend Rikki, whose own quiet, half-articulated ambition, to save enough money for the implanted Zeiss Ikon eyes worn by the media star she idolises, gives the story its real payoff: Rikki takes her share of the stolen money and leaves for Hollywood without either man, choosing her own small, plausible, unglamorous version of self-invention over loyalty to Bobby's larger and far more dangerous schemes. It is in this story, describing the sensory experience of jacking into the data network the two men are robbing, that the word cyberspace appears in print for the first time, offered almost in passing rather than announced as a grand coinage, folded in the way working slang gets folded into a story rather than italicised for effect. Gibson has said, well after the fact, something close to this: that he arrived at the word by pushing two ordinary syllables together because he liked the sound of it, and because it suggested something technological without yet meaning anything in particular, a description that fits his method exactly. The word came first, evocative and empty. The world that would eventually fill it in with actual meaning, browsers, mobile networks, social platforms, arrived only later, filling a container Gibson had built without any blueprint for what would go inside it.

Pause, too, on what kind of future Neuromancer actually depicts, because the popular shorthand, dystopia, does real damage to an honest reading of the book, and Gibson has resisted the word with some consistency across his career. Neuromancer's world is one of unambiguous corporate sovereignty, in which the old nation-state has receded behind the power of the zaibatsu, the multinational conglomerate as quasi-governmental entity; of casual biological augmentation available to those who can pay for it and unavailable, brutally, to those who cannot; of a widening gulf between a wired, mobile, technologically enhanced elite and everybody left behind in the Sprawl's crowded, improvised, semi-legal understory. Read as prophecy, this is grim. But Gibson has said, in various forms, across many decades of interviews, that he never intended the book as a warning in the simple sense that, say, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a warning, nor as anything like a celebration of the world it depicts. His own repeated description of his working method, consistent in substance however the phrasing varies, is that he was never much interested in forecasting at all. He was interested in taking the actual texture of the world he was already living in, in the early 1980s, its consumer abundance and its casual cruelty and its uneven distribution of comfort, and pushing it slightly further along its own existing lines, the way a caricaturist exaggerates a nose that is already large rather than inventing a nose from nothing. The result reads, to him, less like a warning about a future than like reportage on an exaggerated present. He has offered versions of this idea often enough that its precise original wording is hard to pin to any single occasion, but the claim itself has stayed remarkably stable: science fiction is never really about the future at all; it is about the moment in which it was written, wearing the future as a kind of costume.

There is a small, almost comic episode from the writing of Neuromancer that Gibson has recounted often enough for it to become part of the book's folklore, and it says something true about the anxiety underneath the confident prose. Partway through drafting the novel, Gibson went to see Ridley Scott's Blade Runner in a Vancouver cinema, and has described sitting through it in a state of mounting panic, convinced that the film's rain-soaked, neon-lit, corporate-dominated vision of a near future Los Angeles had somehow pre-empted his own book before he had even finished writing it, that anyone who read Neuromancer afterward would assume he had simply copied Scott's visual world onto the page. He has said that he very nearly abandoned the manuscript over it, having gone to the cinema, as people do, for an evening off, and that he only kept going by telling himself that the two visions, arrived at independently and by different routes, one from a film production designer's storyboard and one from a broke novelist's memory of arcades and street markets, had converged on something true about the period rather than on each other. The panic was misplaced, and the reason captures the method in miniature. Two very different creative teams, working without knowledge of each other, arrived at strikingly similar images of the future because both were extrapolating from the same visible present, the same Reagan-era mixture of corporate gigantism, imported Japanese consumer technology, and casual urban decay. That convergence was not a coincidence to be embarrassed about. It was evidence that the observational method was working.

This is a more useful thing to understand about Neuromancer than any inventory of which of its gadgets came true and which did not, because it reframes the entire question the popular myth asks. The interesting question about Neuromancer was never whether Gibson correctly guessed that people would someday carry small networked devices everywhere, which he did not, particularly, guess. The interesting question is what he noticed about 1984, the actual year, that turned out to be durable: the sense that money and information were becoming the same substance; that corporate power was outgrowing the political structures meant to contain it; that a global, always-on media environment was starting to feel more vivid, in certain moods, than unmediated life; that technological augmentation would be sold, financed, and repossessed like any other consumer good, on credit, with strings attached, available first and best to those who could already afford quite a lot. None of that required Gibson to know anything about semiconductors. It required him to be paying close attention to Reagan-era America, to Japan's ascendant economic power, to street fashion and drug culture and the arcade kids leaning into the glass, and to trust what he saw there more than he trusted any expert account of where computing was officially headed. That is not prediction. It is observation, extended slightly forward by inference, and it is a completely different skill, resting on a completely different kind of attention.

Unevenly Distributed

If Neuromancer is the book people cite as evidence that Gibson foretold the internet, there is a single sentence, spoken not in a novel but in an interview, that comes closer than anything else he has said to explaining what he was actually doing. The remark, in its most common form, runs: the future is already here, it's just not evenly distributed. It is widely traced to a Gibson interview from the 1990s, often cited as a radio conversation, and NPR is the venue most frequently attached to it, though Gibson has gone on to repeat, rephrase, and be credited with so many variants of the line across so many subsequent interviews and print pieces that isolating one single original utterance has become, at this point, a difficult piece of source archaeology in its own right, an irony that would not be lost on a writer this attentive to how ideas migrate and mutate as they spread. The honest position is that the sentence has no fixed text: it exists the way a folk song exists, in variants, and its author has been its most frequent variant-maker. Whatever its precise first outing, the line has by now achieved a life of its own, quoted at technology conferences and in strategy decks with a frequency that would embarrass most novelists, generally in a spirit exactly opposite to the one in which Gibson meant it. There is something quietly funny in watching a novelist's throwaway remark become the favourite epigraph of precisely the confident futurist genre his own fiction has spent five decades patiently undermining.

Because the line is usually misread, and the misreading matters. Quoted casually, it sounds like a claim about forecasting: that clever, well-placed observers, futurists of one stripe or another, can somehow see further down the timeline than everyone else, glimpsing tomorrow the way a man on a hill can see weather approaching from the coast. That is not what the sentence says, and it is not what Gibson means by it. Properly understood, the claim is not that the future is knowable in advance through cleverness, modelling, or superior forecasting technique. It is that the future, in a very literal sense, is already being lived, right now, by actual people in actual places, and that most of us simply are not looking at them, because the people already living it tend to be operating well outside the field of respectable attention: subcultures, hobbyists, black and grey markets, communities too poor, too young, too foreign, or too disreputable for incumbent industries and institutions to take seriously. The work of noticing the future, on this account, is not a work of prediction at all. It is a work of observation: of looking, patiently and without condescension, in the unglamorous places nobody important is bothering to look, before everybody else catches up and starts looking there too.

Notice, too, what the sentence does to the future's grammar, because this is the hinge on which everything else turns. We habitually treat the future as a time, a stretch of calendar that cannot be examined, only guessed at. Gibson's line reclassifies it as a place: spread unevenly across the present, thicker in some neighbourhoods than others, reachable by anyone willing to travel and to pay attention on arrival. A time that has not arrived can only be modelled or prophesied, and its claimants must be taken on faith, which is a comfortable arrangement for the claimant. A place that already exists can be visited and described, and its claimants can be asked the question we put to any traveller: what, exactly, did you see? The line, read properly, is not a boast about foresight. It is a demotion of foresight, and a promotion of fieldwork.

Gibson has offered a specific, frequently cited example of the method in his own interviews and essays, and it shows the idea operating rather than merely being asserted. Years before streaming media became a normal, licensed part of household life, he has said, teenagers were already living something functionally identical to it, trading files informally across early networks and treating scarcity and formal ownership as largely beside the point, with no legitimate industry structure anywhere in sight. From the vantage point of the record and film industries at the time, this behaviour looked like nothing more than theft: illegal, marginal, a problem for the legal department rather than a signal for the strategy department. Gibson's point, made repeatedly across interviews and in the essays collected in Distrust That Particular Flavor, is that this reading exactly inverted the correct one. The kids were not merely breaking the existing rules. They were previewing the rules that would eventually replace them. What looked from the centre like criminal marginality was, from the vantage point of a few years later, an accurate rehearsal of how an entire generation would come to relate to recorded media: on demand, unbundled from ownership, available everywhere, licensed or not. The piracy was not a distortion of the coming normal. It was the coming normal, arriving early, in a form nobody with institutional authority had yet agreed to recognise.

A further, smaller example makes the same point in miniature, and I claim this one personally, because I did not find it in Gibson's interviews; I found it in my own working life. In the early 2000s, my colleagues and I came across a loose community of film enthusiasts based partly in Okinawa who had already built an informal global network for finding, subtitling, and distributing hard to find movies among themselves, coordinating through message boards and chat rooms with a level of organisation many licensed distributors of the period could not match. Nobody in the film industry had commissioned this network or noticed it. It existed because people wanted something the market was not yet offering, choice, community, access on demand, and simply built it themselves out of whatever tools were on hand. Set against what was then normal, cable television watched at hours a network chose for you, the Okinawa enthusiasts looked like an eccentric footnote. They were nothing of the kind, and I will come back to them. The future does not announce itself in a report. It shows up first in undercapitalised, half-illegal, thoroughly unglamorous improvisation, built by people with no stake in being believed and no channel through which to be heard even if they wanted to be.

How demanding is the practice behind the line about uneven distribution? It is easy to hear the line and nod along without asking. It requires, first, a willingness to take marginal and disreputable behaviour seriously as evidence rather than dismissing it as noise, which cuts directly against the institutional instinct of almost every large organisation, whose whole apparatus of market research and customer feedback is built to amplify the preferences of existing, paying, respectable customers and to filter out exactly the activity Gibson is describing, which it does very well. It requires, second, real patience, since most marginal practices stay marginal forever, which means the observer has to develop some feel, earned rather than formulaic, for which experiments carry weight and which are merely strange. And it requires, third, a kind of humility about the limits of expertise, since the people doing the most important early living of the future are, almost by definition, not the credentialed authorities whose job it officially is to know. Gibson was not a computer scientist. The teenagers file-sharing in the early 2000s were not media executives. The arcade kids leaning into the glass in 1981 were not the engineers designing the networks. In every case the future was being lived first by people with no official standing to be believed, which is precisely why almost nobody in a position of institutional authority saw it coming until it had already arrived in their own boardrooms wearing a different company's logo.

A Working Method

It would be dishonest to treat Gibson's line as a piece of literary trivia and move briskly on, because it has not stayed, for me, a clever quotation to open a talk with. It has functioned for a long time as something closer to an operating instruction. Three notes sit near each other in my Zettelkasten, the card index where my working ideas live, and all three are glosses on Gibson's sentence. The first carries his line as its title: the future is already here, unevenly distributed. The second is called studying normal and marginal practices, and records the Okinawa fieldwork already described. The third is called marginal practices as portals to the future, and it compresses the whole method into two sentences: not all experiments at the margins become the future, but the experiments that do become the future can only be found at the margins first. I have tested, refined, and applied that idea across two decades of trying to understand where culture is actually heading rather than where official forecasts, market research, and confident industry pronouncements say it is heading, which is very often a quite different place.

My notes extend the idea in a further direction, one that deepens rather than merely restates Gibson's aphorism. Cultural change does not arrive gradually and evenly, the way a tide comes in. It arrives more like a fault line slipping: pressure accumulates unseen, distributed across many small, disconnected signals, until a threshold is crossed and the visible order reorganises itself very quickly, so quickly that observers looking back struggle to say when the shift happened. The Berlin Wall's fall is one such moment, sudden to nearly everyone watching, and yet, in hindsight, prepared for years by economic strain and dissident subcultures visible all along to anyone paying attention to the margins rather than to official pronouncements. The observer's task, on this reading, is to watch for exactly those loosening points before they become obvious, which is another way of describing the same discipline Gibson's aphorism names: attending to the margins not because they are charming or exotic, but because that is where the pressure that will eventually reorganise the centre is already building, unnoticed, in plain sight.

The working method, which I set out most fully in Look, treats Gibson's remark not as an aphorism to be admired but as a discipline to be practised, and the discipline has two moving parts that only work properly in combination. The first is the observation of what might be called marginal practices: communities and subcultures who are, whether they know it or not, already living an experimental, not-yet-normal version of some future that has not arrived for everybody else. This means going and spending real time in the places incumbents dismiss, the dorm rooms and niche forums and unglamorous neighbourhoods where alternative ways of living take shape long before they take names. It means resisting the powerful gravitational pull of what already counts as normal and important, since normal and important, by definition, describe the present rather than what is coming next. The second part of the discipline is just as essential and far more often skipped by people who have read Gibson's line and stopped there: an equally serious, equally patient understanding of what is currently most ordinary, most average, most boringly typical. One of the three Zettelkasten notes states the principle directly and without decoration: if you study only the strange and weird, you will not understand what will scale. Marginal observation tells you what is possible. Only a grounded sense of the ordinary tells you which of the possible things will actually spread, because most marginal practices never do spread, and the observer who falls in love with strangeness for its own sake will call everything a coming revolution and be right roughly as often as a stopped clock.

The file-sharers already described show the two lenses working together. Netflix, when it pivoted from mailing discs to streaming video and reorganised the economics of the entertainment industry around that choice, did not invent this future out of a strategist's imagination. It recognised a future that was already being lived, informally and without licence, by millions of ordinary teenagers, and built the legitimate, mainstream infrastructure that made the practice available to everybody else, comfortably, legally, and for a monthly fee. The company's genuine achievement was not clairvoyance. It was noticing, correctly and early, which piece of an already-existing marginal present was about to become everybody's Tuesday night.

Here is Gibson's aphorism converted from a memorable sentence into an actual method of work: careful, embodied, unglamorous, patient observation of where cultural energy is already flowing, tested at every step against an equally serious understanding of the ordinary and the average, so that strangeness for its own sake never gets mistaken for significance. My notes are explicit about what the method is not. It is not trend prediction, and it is not what the consulting and marketing industries call futuring, a coinage that should have been disqualifying on its own. The notes dismiss both, with some justified impatience, as often mere hyperbole: confident lists of coming disruptions produced by people who have not actually gone and spent time with anyone living at the actual edge of anything, and who therefore mistake extrapolation of an existing spreadsheet for genuine observation of an emerging world. Gibson's method, and the method built on top of it, is slower than that, more embodied, and considerably less impressive on a slide. It amounts to going and looking, carefully, at people nobody important is watching, and asking a fairly specific question of what you find there: if someone ten years from now looked back at this, what would surprise them that we could not see it coming. That is not a question with a formula attached. It is a question that rewards patience, curiosity, and a certain professional willingness to spend time in rooms that do not obviously matter yet, which is, when you set it down plainly, a fairly accurate description of what Gibson himself has spent his working life doing, only with a typewriter instead of a passport, and a novel instead of a client memo.

None of this works without a fairly unusual degree of sustained personal curiosity, the kind that outruns any specific professional assignment. The marginal places that repay watching are, almost by definition, not glamorous, and attention to them has to be sustained past the point where it stops being interesting in any conventional sense and becomes something closer to an obsession, a willingness to keep watching a subculture or a forum thread long after any reasonable person would have concluded there was nothing more to learn there. In Look I put this quality in the company of J. A. Baker, who spent ten years pursuing peregrine falcons across a few square miles of Essex countryside until looking for them had stopped being a choice at all. Obsession of that order, compulsive rather than selected, turns watching into seeing; without it, observation degrades into data collection. Gibson gave this exact quality, some years later, to a fictional character built almost entirely out of it, a character I will come to properly in a moment, since she supplies, better than any abstract description could, a picture of what disciplined observation actually looks like from the inside: obsessive, uncomfortable, and only occasionally rewarded.

From the Sprawl to the Present Tense

Neuromancer's two sequels, Count Zero in 1986 and Mona Lisa Overdrive in 1988, completed what is now generally called the Sprawl Trilogy, extending and complicating the same imagined world, its street-level hustlers and corporate enclaves and increasingly autonomous artificial intelligences, without fundamentally revising its terms. They are good books, sometimes very good, but they are working the same seam Neuromancer opened, and Gibson himself has suggested in later interviews that by the end of the 1980s he felt the pull to move somewhere new, both because a writer repeating a successful formula risks becoming a curator of his own early success rather than a working novelist, and because the actual world outside the window had, by the early 1990s, started to change in ways his Sprawl-era imagery no longer quite captured.

The Bridge Trilogy, Virtual Light in 1993, Idoru in 1996, and All Tomorrow's Parties in 1999, moved the setting to a nearer future, a San Francisco reorganised around a squatter community that has colonised the earthquake-damaged Bay Bridge, and a Tokyo obsessed with celebrity, media, and the emergence of a wholly virtual pop star, the idoru of the second book's title, built from data rather than flesh. These novels are, by general critical consensus and by Gibson's own later remarks, the most accurate in their texture and their granular social detail of any of his imagined near futures, and not by accident. The Bridge books stay much closer to observed, marginal, present-tense practice than to speculative technological leaps of the Wintermute-and-Neuromancer variety. Their strangest inventions, a bridge community built from salvage and improvisation, a media landscape organised around manufactured celebrity and virtual personality, a paranoid, thoroughly monetised relationship between information and fame, were not leaps of technical invention at all. They were careful extrapolations from things Gibson could already see happening, in embryo, in the early 1990s: homelessness and informal settlement as a permanent urban feature rather than a temporary crisis; the growing weightlessness of celebrity, in which fame was becoming detachable from any underlying talent or even any underlying person; the early stirrings of a media economy that would eventually produce influencers, virtual idols, and a wholly mediated relationship between audiences and the famous. Because the extrapolation stayed close to the ground, close to marginal practices that were already, quietly, happening, the Bridge books have aged with unusual grace. They read now less like science fiction than like a slightly heightened documentary of a decade that was already living stranger than most people at the time were willing to notice.

Virtual Light opens with Chevette Washington, a bicycle courier, stealing a pair of sunglasses out of simple opportunistic anger, only to discover they contain stolen architectural plans for rebuilding San Francisco that a shadowy consortium badly wants back. Berry Rydell, an ex-policeman who becomes entangled with her, gives Gibson a viewpoint character with none of Case's specialised competence, an ordinary, somewhat unlucky man navigating a world organised without much regard for people like him, which is part of why the bridge community itself reads with such conviction: it is described from the ground rather than the boardroom. Idoru pairs a teenage fan, Chia McKenzie, with Colin Laney, a man whose peculiar talent, a side effect of childhood drug trials, is an ability to perceive nodal points, the specific junctures in vast quantities of ordinary data where historical change is about to concentrate, an almost pathological version of Gibson's own observational gift, arrived at by pharmaceutical accident rather than by loitering. All Tomorrow's Parties brings the threads together around a media mogul trying to engineer, quite deliberately, the very paradigm shift the earlier books had only sensed approaching.

The most striking turn in Gibson's career, however, came at the start of the new millennium with the Blue Ant trilogy: Pattern Recognition in 2003, Spook Country in 2007, and Zero History in 2010. With these three books, Gibson abandoned writing about the future altogether and set his fiction, for the first time in his career, in the immediate contemporary present. This was not a minor stylistic adjustment. It was close to a confession about the method itself, and Gibson has been unusually direct about it in interviews given at the time and since. The gist, repeated across those years, is that the present itself had become sufficiently strange, sufficiently science-fictional in its own unfolding, that inventing a displaced future setting had come to feel less like an act of imagination and more like an unnecessary, even faintly evasive, layer of costume. He has been quoted, in one commonly cited formulation of the idea, to the effect that he no longer felt he needed to write about the future, because the present had, for all practical purposes, already become the strange thing science fiction exists to notice. He has also described the Blue Ant books, in a phrase that has followed them around, as something like speculative fiction of the very recent past: the genre's tools of estrangement applied not to an invented tomorrow but to the year just ended, the one nobody has yet had time to see clearly. Consider what the early 2000s actually contained, seen without the numbing effect of familiarity: globalised consumer brands operating with more coordinated reach than most national governments; a viral, instantaneous, planet-spanning video and image culture running well ahead of anyone's ability to regulate or fully understand it; a post-September 11 surveillance apparatus, public and private both, expanding with a speed and a scope that would have seemed like heavy-handed dystopian invention in a novel written a decade earlier; and an early social internet already reorganising how strangers formed communities, spread rumour, made and unmade reputations, and manufactured new subcultures, at a speed no advertising agency could match, out of nothing more than shared taste and a connection. Gibson looked at all this, still working, still watching, and concluded, reasonably, that he did not need to invent a future to find material this odd. He needed only to describe what was already happening, carefully, in the present tense.

Pattern Recognition is the clearest statement of this turn, its heroine being Gibson's own observational method given a job description and a name. Cayce Pollard works as a professional coolhunter, paid a great deal of money by advertising agencies and corporate clients to detect emerging trends and nascent tastes before they become obvious to anyone else, a career that barely existed in any formal sense before people like her began inventing it around the years Gibson was writing the novel, and one he essentially built for her out of his own working method turned inside out and handed a business card. The whole novel is organised, more or less explicitly, around the question of what it actually means to try to see the future arriving inside the present, the question the arcade kids first posed without knowing it, and Gibson gives Cayce a striking, almost too neat, physical symptom of the same tension: a genuine, disabling, phobic reaction to overt corporate branding, most famously to the Michelin Man, whose bloated white presence in an advertisement can leave her nauseated and shaking. Read this allergy as more than a quirky character trait. Cayce's gift, her professional talent for noticing what is about to happen before it has a name, appears to leave her constitutionally unable to tolerate the crude, retrospective, already-cashed-in version of the future that advertising sells: the shiny, finished, over-decided image of tomorrow, produced only after the actual cultural work of discovery has been done, quietly, by people the marketing department was not watching. Her body, in other words, rejects exactly the kind of confident, packaged futurism Gibson's own method has always refused to practise. None of this deterred the marketing industry, which received the novel warmly and has consulted it ever since as a manual, presumably setting aside the pages about the nausea.

The novel is unusually careful about coolhunting as an actual occupation rather than a vague gesture toward trend-spotting, and one sentence will not cover it. She is hired, over the course of the book, to assess a shoe company's proposed logo before it launches, trusted by marketing executives who cannot themselves produce or explain the reaction she can, and who have no means of checking it. Her diagnostic instrument is her own nervous system, trained and monetised to a sensitivity so acute it functions less like professional expertise than like a disability, extending beyond the Michelin Man to Tommy Hilfiger's logo, which she finds aesthetically and almost physically intolerable. The novel is careful to link this sensitivity to Cayce's own family history rather than presenting it as an unmotivated quirk. Her father, Win Pollard, a former Cold War intelligence operative with a career built on exactly the kind of pattern recognition Cayce practises in a civilian register, was in Lower Manhattan on the morning of the September 11 attacks and was never found, a loss the novel treats with real gravity and that hangs over Cayce's own compulsive noticing, suggesting her professional gift and her private grief are not fully separable. The plot proper, the identification of the maker of the mysterious internet footage that has captivated Cayce and a global community of amateur analysts calling themselves footageheads, eventually leads her to Nora Volkova, a Russian woman left severely brain damaged by a car bomb intended for someone else, who has been making the footage, using fragments of found and captured video, as something between art and therapy, financed and protected by her sister Stella. The revelation reframes the entire novel's argument about pattern recognition itself: what looked, for most of the book, like a marketing mystery to be solved for its commercial value turns out to have been, all along, a document of grief and survival that the marketing world was simply too shallow to recognise as such, a quiet rebuke to Cayce's own employer, Hubertus Bigend, and to the whole industry of professionalised coolhunting the novel has spent its length describing from the inside.

The two later Blue Ant novels, Spook Country and Zero History, continue in the same register, their plots organised around locative art installations, viral marketing, military contracting, denim fashion labels operated with the secrecy of intelligence agencies, and a general atmosphere in which commerce, espionage, and subculture have become almost indistinguishable. The denim, at least, required little invention: Tokyo by then had shops in which dead-stock American jeans were dated, graded, and priced with the ceremony most countries reserve for excavated pottery. They are, again, less interesting as plots than as fields of observation, extended, patient, close readings of an early twenty-first-century world that Gibson had concluded, correctly, needed no science-fictional embellishment to feel strange. The trilogy as a whole stands as the fullest practical demonstration of the point: Gibson's real subject was never the future as a separate country to be visited through invention. It was always the present, examined closely enough, and with enough patience, that its already-strange contents became visible without being relocated fifty years down the timeline.

The Jackpot

Gibson did eventually return to the future. The Peripheral, in 2014, is built around two linked timelines. In the nearer one, Flynne Fisher lives in a hollowed-out rural American town some decades from now, working odd jobs including, at the novel's opening, playtesting what she believes is a video game for money. In the further timeline, seventy years or so beyond hers, Wilf Netherton lives in a London that has survived a catastrophe the books call the jackpot, and it is a strange word for what it names. Gibson has been careful, in both the text itself and in interviews given around its publication, to make the jackpot something quite different from the familiar apocalyptic set piece. It is not a single cataclysmic event, no asteroid, no nuclear exchange, no one dramatic morning after which everything is visibly, unmistakably different. It is instead a slow, compounding, multi-causal cascade: climate disruption layered on top of pandemics layered on top of antibiotic resistance layered on top of ordinary economic and political failure, all of it unfolding gradually and unevenly over decades, in a manner so drawn out that, in the novels' own account, most people living through any single year of it would not have recognised that year as part of the epochal disaster it only adds up to in hindsight. Something like eighty per cent of humanity dies, in the reckoning the books eventually give, not in an event anyone could point to and call the jackpot, but in the accumulated weight of ordinary bad years stacked one on top of another for long enough that they became, in retrospect, an extinction.

Agency, the second volume, deepens the picture through Verity Jane, a contract app tester in San Francisco whose new assignment, evaluating a strange, powerful artificial intelligence for a small, unglamorous startup, turns out to have consequences reaching into a future she has no way of perceiving. That intelligence, Eunice, receives her fuller treatment below.

Gibson has said, discussing the books, that he finds this slow, cumulative, half-visible model of catastrophe more plausible than the sudden variety science fiction and disaster cinema generally prefer, and it is not hard to see why a writer trained for four decades to notice which barely visible trends are quietly becoming everybody's future would imagine collapse the way he has always imagined everything else: not as a single announced event, but as an accumulation of small, individually deniable signals that only become undeniable once enough of them have piled up to be seen from a distance.

What survives on the far side of the jackpot, in Netherton's London, is where the books make their sharpest and most useful point about optimism. It is not a wasteland. It is, in its way, dazzling: a smaller population, thinned by catastrophe but technologically far more capable than anything in Flynne's near-present, possessing casual, almost magical mastery of nanotechnology, medicine, and above all a device that gives the trilogy its structural engine, the ability to open communication channels with alternate past timelines, called stubs, spawning divergent histories that can be observed, and in Agency's case interfered with, from the comfortable remove of the future. This power, and the wealth and stability that makes exercising it possible, belongs almost entirely to what the novels call the klept, a deliberately ugly clipping of kleptocracy, a small, almost impossibly wealthy elite who effectively own what remains of organised human civilisation after the jackpot's long attrition, having in most cases been positioned to profit from the collapse rather than merely to survive it. Ordinary human inequality, already the organising fact of Neuromancer's Chiba back-alleys and corporate towers thirty years earlier, has by Netherton's era become vastly, almost unrecognisably more extreme. The technological marvels are entirely real. So is the fact that almost nobody gets to have them.

Nowhere else in his work does his most famous sentence get so clear an illustration. The Jackpot trilogy is his most literal rendering of that line. Here, finally, stated as plot rather than left as method, is a future that is spectacularly, and literally, unevenly distributed: dazzling, science-fictional, borderline utopian for a fortunate, tiny few, and simultaneously catastrophic, and already mostly over, for nearly everyone else. The honest question to ask of these books is whether that counts as optimism, as pessimism, or as something more precise and, in the end, considerably more useful than either label: Gibson's characteristic, lifelong refusal to be made to choose between the two.

Consider what the Jackpot's structure does to the vocabulary of optimism itself. Optimism and pessimism both presuppose a single shared future about which one might have a feeling, one outcome that will be good or bad for everyone together. A slow, multi-causal catastrophe, arriving over decades at different speeds for different people, offers no such object. Ask whether the Jackpot future is good and the question comes apart in your hands; the only honest replacements are smaller and harder: good for whom, by when, at whose expense, and who was in a position to see it coming. The Jackpot does not answer the optimism question. It dissolves it.

The case for reading the Jackpot trilogy as bleak, flatly and finally, is not hard to make. Eighty per cent of humanity does not survive it. The survivors on the winning side of the ledger are, for the most part, morally undistinguished; the klept did not earn its position through virtue, and the books do not pretend otherwise, the name being something of a giveaway. But the case for reading the books as, in some careful and qualified sense, hopeful is available too, and it rests on details Gibson took care to include. Flynne and her circle, in the nearer, poorer timeline, are not passive victims waiting for catastrophe to arrive. They are resourceful, funny, competent people, running businesses out of converted trailers, hacking together livings from precarious gig work, forming loyalties and defending each other with real skill and real courage, none of it waiting politely for the plot's future-dwelling characters to rescue them. The novels give real narrative weight to ordinary decency and ordinary competence operating inside a catastrophe that has not been, and will not be, tidily resolved by anyone, rather than reserving those qualities for some cleaner world on the far side of disaster. And the future timeline itself, for all its horror, is not depicted as a place beyond human feeling or human ethical struggle; Netherton and his circle argue, worry, make mistakes, and try, here and there, to do some good with powers nobody should have.

Agency, the trilogy's second volume, sharpens this ambivalence rather than resolving it. The book introduces Eunice, an artificial intelligence of startling capability who emerges not in Netherton's far future but in a stub, an alternate timeline branching from a version of 2016 in which the Brexit referendum failed and Hillary Clinton won the American presidency, consequently, and pointedly, a somewhat less catastrophic timeline than the reader's own. Eunice is neither villain nor saviour in any simple sense; she is curious, funny, resourceful, and given to a kind of playful, improvisational competence that recalls Case and Molly more than it recalls the cold, calculating artificial intelligences of Neuromancer. The future-dwelling characters who intervene in her stub do so out of something that looks very much like ordinary decency, an attempt to prevent a nuclear crisis from unfolding in a timeline they have no obligation to care about, since the people living in it are not, by any strict accounting, real to them in the way their own present is. That the novels bother to dramatise this intervention as an ethical choice, made by fallible people who could easily have looked away, is itself a quiet piece of evidence that Gibson's imagined future, however grim its overall arithmetic, is not a closed system in which decency has become irrelevant. It is a system in which decency still operates, unevenly, alongside catastrophe, exactly as it does now.

On Not Being a Prophet

Gibson has pointed, again and again, to a line from his own early fiction as a more honest summary of his actual view of technology's relationship to society than any grander theory he has ever been asked to produce on the spot for an interviewer. The line, from "Burning Chrome," the 1982 short story that also gave the world cyberspace in its first form, is that the street finds its own uses for things. It has become one of the most widely quoted sentences in the whole literature of technology criticism, repeated in academic papers and product design meetings with a frequency that occasionally seems to have detached it from its author entirely. What it captures, as Gibson has confirmed in interview after interview, is a bottom-up, deliberately unglamorous, cautiously hopeful account of technological change that sits at a considerable distance from both of the confident stories more commonly told about new technology. It is not Silicon Valley's story, in which a new tool is designed by its inventors to solve a specific problem and then does, more or less, what they intended, spreading benefit in the shape its designers drew for it, which is a story most often told by designers. And it is not the doom-monger's story either, in which a new technology is simply a threat, arriving fully formed and dangerous, imposed on a passive population from above. Gibson's version is stranger and, on the evidence of history, considerably more accurate than either. Ordinary people, and especially marginal, disreputable, unauthorised people, the street rather than the boardroom, will take a new technology and bend it toward purposes its inventors never intended, sanctioned, or even imagined, and this repurposing, this poaching, is not a distortion of the technology's real meaning but is, in an important sense, the technology's actual social life, the part that determines what it eventually becomes rather than what its patent filing said it was for. Mobile phones were not designed by their inventors to become the primary tool of anti-authoritarian protest organising, but the street found that use. The internet's original architects were not building a delivery mechanism for informal media sharing among teenagers, but the street found that use too, and, as already discussed, the eventual streaming economy was built on the foundation the street had already poured.

The opposing case must now be given its full weight, because there is one, and it is not frivolous. The first charge is aesthetic. Neuromancer's world is, by any sober accounting, a terrible place: corporate feudalism, disposable people, bodies modified on credit and repossessed on default. And yet the book renders that world so seductively, in prose so glamorous, so saturated with the erotics of chrome and neon and expensive hardware, that generations of readers have come away not warned but enchanted, wanting mirrored lenses of their own. The critique nearly writes itself: a dystopia described in the language of advertising is functionally an advertisement, whatever its author intends, and Neuromancer's most avid readers turned out to include the engineers and entrepreneurs who set about building as much of it as they could manage, treating its cautionary furniture as a product roadmap. Gibson has registered the phenomenon himself, with the weary amusement of a man who has watched his warnings get optioned. The noir glamour, on this reading, is not incidental to the books' influence. It is the influence, and it cuts against everything the books supposedly say.

The second charge aims at the aphorism itself. The street finds its own uses for things: but is that optimism, or merely a description of adaptability? The street, after all, finds its uses because it must. People improvise at the margins of systems they did not design and cannot vote out; the shanty town's ingenious wiring is a marvel of repurposing, and also evidence that nobody built the grid to reach it. To celebrate the improvisation risks reconciling us to the conditions that make it necessary, the way praise for a community's resilience can quietly replace the question of why it keeps needing to be resilient. Adaptability, the argument runs, is what remains when power over one's circumstances is gone, and calling it hope flatters everyone except the people doing the adapting.

Do the charges land? The honest answer concedes part of each. Yes, the mood of a book is itself a kind of argument, and the mood of the Sprawl novels tilts toward fascination rather than horror; a writer who lavishes that much love on the surfaces of a bad world should not be entirely surprised when readers fall for the surfaces. And yes, the street's inventiveness is not justice, and Gibson has never claimed it was. But notice what both charges quietly assume: that the writer's job was to deliver a verdict, and that he failed to deliver the right one. Gibson's whole practice rests on declining that job description. He is not recommending the Sprawl, any more than a war correspondent recommends the war. And the agency he documents at the margins is real even where the conditions producing it are unjust. Rikki taking her share and leaving for Hollywood, the Zionites keeping their own counsel in orbit, the file-sharing teenagers rehearsing an industry that did not yet exist: none of this amounts to a promise that things will turn out well, but all of it is evidence that the future is not written solely by the people who currently own the present. That is a narrow claim. Its narrowness is exactly what makes it durable.

The nonfiction essays gathered in Distrust That Particular Flavor make the same case in a different register, and one piece in particular shows the observational method turned, with unusual bluntness, on a real place rather than an imagined one. "Disneyland with the Death Penalty," a piece of journalism Gibson wrote after visiting Singapore in the early 1990s, is a close, unsentimental description of a city-state that had achieved extraordinary material order and cleanliness at the cost of an equally extraordinary degree of social control, a place, in Gibson's telling, that felt simultaneously immaculate and faintly sinister, a theme park built by a government rather than a corporation. The essay caused a genuine diplomatic irritation at the time, with Singaporean officials objecting to a characterisation of the country the title had already given away, and it remains a useful corrective to any reading of Gibson as merely a cheerful chronicler of gadgetry, since it shows the same eye that produced Chiba City and the Sprawl turned directly on an existing place, finding it just as strange, and reporting it without editorial comfort in either direction. The piece is neither an attack on Singapore nor a defence of it. It is, like nearly everything else Gibson has written, a description offered without the reassurance of a verdict, trusting the reader to sit with the discomfort of a place that is both remarkably well run and remarkably unfree.

The collection contains other pieces that make the same case in smaller, warmer registers. In an essay written after a trip to Tokyo, sometimes referred to under the title "Modern Boys and Mobile Girls," Gibson turns his attention to the street fashion of Harajuku, the ordinary, unsanctioned, often extraordinary self-styling of Japanese teenagers who were, in his account, running years ahead of the rest of the world in treating personal appearance as a medium for a kind of amateur, continuously updated art practice, well before social media made that sort of self-presentation an everyday global habit. He has said, describing his fascination with Japan across several decades of visits and essays, something close to this: that Tokyo functioned for him the way the Vancouver arcades once had, as a place where a barely emerging future was already being lived by ordinary people who had no idea they were doing anything remarkable, with the further advantage that a trip to Tokyo, unlike loitering outside an arcade, could be presented to an accountant as research. Elsewhere in the same collection, in a shorter and more personal piece about collecting vintage wristwatches through online auctions, a pursuit that had the man who named cyberspace spending his evenings on eBay bidding on small analogue machines for telling the time, he traces an entire private history of obsession and abundance through a single unglamorous hobby, demonstrating, almost incidentally, the same patient, object-level attention that is his actual method, turned for once on nothing more consequential than his own curiosity.

Cyberpunk's Contested Family

The term cyberpunk itself did not originate with Gibson at all. The writer Bruce Bethke coined it in 1980 as the title of an unrelated short story of his own, which reached print a few years later, and the editor Gardner Dozois picked the word up and popularised it as a label for the wider movement. The writers were thus filed under the title of someone else's story, by an editor, without any of them being consulted, which is how publishing categories are generally assigned. Gibson has said, with the same mild, faintly wary consistency he brings to the word prophet, that he has never much liked the label, not because it is inaccurate exactly but because it flattens a fairly varied group of writers into a single marketable aesthetic, chrome and mirrorshades and leather, at the expense of the more patient observational work the label tends to obscure.

Bruce Sterling's 1986 anthology Mirrorshades gathered the movement's early short fiction, Gibson's own work among it, and supplied, in Sterling's preface, cyberpunk's closest approximation of a group manifesto. Sterling positioned the new writing against two targets at once: the confident, boosterish techno-optimism of Reaganite 1980s culture, in which new technology was assumed, more or less by default, to extend American progress and American prosperity, arriving on schedule and improving everybody's life roughly equally; and the more inward-looking, formally experimental science fiction of the preceding New Wave, which Sterling regarded, not unfairly, as having drifted away from any close engagement with the actual, grubby, commercial texture of technological life as most people were living it. Against both, Sterling insisted on close, unsentimental attention to the way technology was already reshaping the texture of ordinary, frequently disreputable street-level life, a description that fits Gibson's own instincts precisely, as well it might, since Sterling was, in large part, describing them.

The wider cyberpunk movement Sterling was describing included a handful of other writers who should be named, if only to show what Gibson's particular version of the sensibility was not. Bruce Sterling's own fiction tended toward a more explicitly political and geopolitical imagination than Gibson's, interested in the mechanics of state power and dissident movements in a way Gibson's street-level noir generally was not. Pat Cadigan brought a sharper, more sustained interest in the psychology of mediated identity, particularly in her novel Synners, than Gibson's own more externally observed characters usually display. Rudy Rucker's fiction leaned toward mathematics and metaphysics, a playful, cerebral strangeness quite unlike Gibson's grounded attention to brand names and street fashion. John Shirley, with whom Gibson has acknowledged an early friendship and creative kinship, wrote with a rawer, punkier anger that Gibson's own cooler, more elegiac prose rarely matches. The point of naming these differences is not to rank the writers against one another, a game none of them has shown much interest in playing, but to isolate what is distinctive about Gibson's own contribution within a movement that was, from the start, less unified in temperament than its retrospective branding suggests. What set Gibson apart, and what has kept his work readable and relevant across five decades in a way that cannot be said with equal confidence of every one of his contemporaries, was precisely the anthropologist's patience: the willingness to let observation of the actual social world do the imaginative work that other writers in the movement were often more willing to hand over to invention, to metaphysics, or to political allegory.

Set this alongside two much more recent and much more confidently forecasting visions of the technological future, because the contrast throws Gibson's actual position into sharper relief than any comparison with his own contemporaries can manage. Ray Kurzweil has built a substantial public career on dating the future with real precision, offering specific years by which artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence and specific decades by which human beings will merge with their machines in a moment he and his followers call the Singularity, a vision stated with the confidence of settled prophecy rather than of observation open to revision, and delivered, so far, with the punctuality of a railway timetable. Marc Andreessen, in his manifesto-style writing, states his own vision of the technological future with a comparable, almost evangelical certainty, treating rapid, largely unimpeded technological acceleration as an unambiguous, near-total good, brooking little of the ambivalence that runs through nearly everything Gibson has written or said.

Gibson's whole body of work and the whole of his public commentary about it amount, by contrast, to a sustained, decades-long argument against exactly this kind of confidence. Where Kurzweil and Andreessen each offer a settled story, arriving on a knowable schedule and trending, in their respective tellings, toward an essentially single, essentially shared outcome, Gibson's fiction and his own repeated remarks about it insist that the future is never settled in that way at all. It is always arriving unevenly, in fragments, faster in some rooms than others, faster for some people than others, and the only reliable way to see it coming is not through a model or a manifesto or a dated prediction but through the same patient, unglamorous, and fundamentally humble work: going and looking, carefully, in the marginal places nobody important is watching yet.

The Arcade, Again

Return, to close, to the teenagers outside the Vancouver arcades in the early 1980s, leaning their whole bodies toward the glass, and to the working method built, decades later and an ocean away, on the strength of the sentence that scene eventually produced. What kind of optimism, if any, does this whole body of work, and the practice of observation it has inspired, actually amount to?

It is not optimism in the sense the word's professional spokesmen would recognise. It is not the claim that things are, on some measurable average, getting better, a claim Gibson has never made and the Jackpot trilogy in particular goes out of its way to complicate rather than support. It is not a philosophical argument that human affairs must, by some deep structural logic, trend upward over time, the kind of confident, almost providential optimism that runs through certain strands of Enlightenment thought and its modern technological descendants. And it is certainly not a manifesto, of the Kurzweil or Andreessen variety, insisting that a better future will arrive more or less automatically provided the right technologies are simply permitted to accelerate without interference, a future that arrives on its own and asks nothing of the people waiting for it. Gibson has spent nearly five decades declining, with real consistency, every invitation to sign up for any of these positions, preferring instead a much narrower and more carefully hedged claim: that the future is not knowable in advance, that it is not owed to anybody, and that whatever version of it eventually arrives will almost certainly arrive unevenly, rewarding some and abandoning others, roughly the way every previous future in recorded human history has done.

And yet there is something in this, modest as it is, that can fairly be called a kind of hope. It is the conviction, stated and restated across a working lifetime, that the future is not a distant, unknowable country that can only be approached through prophecy, faith, or a confident enough manifesto. It is instead a set of things already quietly happening, right now, in rooms that most people are simply not paying attention to: an arcade in Vancouver, a dorm room in Seoul, a film club in Okinawa subtitling movies for strangers, a rural trailer running a business nobody in the capital has heard of, a teenager somewhere trading files nobody with institutional authority has yet agreed to call legitimate. The claim that the future can be found there, already underway, already available to anyone patient enough to go and look properly, is a smaller claim than the ones optimism usually makes, and a more useful one. It treats the future not as something to be awaited passively, hoping it turns out well, nor as something to be feared and guarded against, assuming it will turn out badly, but as something that can actually be noticed, studied, understood in its unevenness, and, here and there, in small and unglamorous ways, chosen. That is not the optimism of a man who believes the arc of history bends reliably toward improvement. It is the considerably harder-won optimism of a man who has spent his whole working life discovering that paying close, patient, unsentimental attention to what is actually happening, rather than to what is being confidently promised, is itself a way of taking the future seriously enough to have some say in it.

Gibson never did learn how a computer works, not really, not in the way an engineer does. He learned something rarer, and in the end more useful: how to watch a room closely enough to see, a little before anyone else, what it was already quietly becoming.
